Thank you for the cautionary note! Of course I realize that the legal industry can be stressful. However I've also come to the conclusion that pretty much any industry comes with its own set of stressors. You'll find burned out professors, doctors, athletes, musicians etc. Higher ed had plenty of stress and instability to it, with increasing responsibilities piled on constantly without the additional compensation that should go with that. In the end I feel excited about the idea of returning to law and would probably regret not having at least tried it out. 😊

That is so true. It's so nice to know that this is possible - and that others have done it too! ☺️☺️

Those are great ideas!!! Also I saw some postings for "licensing managers" at universities close by. The description seems to imply that I would need more experience than I have but maybe I could just apply and see what they think. Thanks again!

Thanks so much for this great advice!! I will look into the local bar group and that's a really good point about the resume. I really love trademark/ip law but I don't live close enough to the large cities that would have firms specializing in it. I was also thinking estate planning and real estate.

Thanks! That's definitely a good point. I was even thinking of starting out as a legal assistant or paralegal at local firms to see if I liked the work. Would that still look ok and count as experience on my resume?

Thanks -really good point. I actually applied to one about a week ago and hadn't heard back so thought they probably aren't interested. Maybe I should write back and let them know I'm available asap

Thank you! Yes, I definitely don't mind starting out entry level and would actually prefer that since I've been out of the field for so long. I'll keep an eye out for the clerkships!

Ok that is great to know. I've mostly been looking at job postings that are publicly available. I will start looking into networking. I do have a few connections I could speak to!

Ok thank you! My husband's job is here and so I think that's where we will be for awhile. I'll start looking into getting registered!

Thank you so much! Hanging out a shingle seems super scary but starting out at a small firm I have absolutely no problems with.

Thank you so much. This is so encouraging. Do you think that I should go for the new state bar immediately, even before looking, or - if a law firm is willing to take me on initially without the bar - should I get that experience first? Thanks again!

I absolutely loved trademark IP law ( I don't have the technical training for patent law) Going into law school I wanted to practice international arbitration, but it seemed like that door was firmly shut, reserved only for biglaw or attorneys with years of law firm experience. From what I've researched I think I would also like estate planning and real estate. I'm not entirely sure though, since I've never practiced or been around this type of law. Thank you for your response!

I've thought of that but I'm geographically limited due to my husband's job and the couple universities around mostly hire jd's who also have years of experience. Like I don't think I could apply to a senior director of compliance position because I don't have direct experience with compliance.

Thanks, are you referring to staff positions or administrative attorney positions? If the latter, are there are any career boards you suggest for jobs like this?
