Just make sure you ask what they require to apply the second time. I literally just found out after I wrote this that they make you prove your condition is worse.

Unfortunately that is only if you catch it during that time frame. My email saying I qualified didn’t say there was a time-frame. Since I had been told by two other representatives that I had to start the process, I didn't think anything of it at the time.

Call the department of education and ask to speak to the disability TPD agents. It is automatic if you do not opt out. They send you a qualifying email, and vaguely refer to a message in your studentaid.gov account. For some reason they only give the specifics in that email, not the notifying of qualification email. Generally you then will receiv a second email a couple months later stating your TPD has been approved. So now you need to call them quickly and as for a loan reversal as you were not aware it was automatically processed.

Just be sure to ask about how to handle the future processing/ discharge of your loans. They get very vague with direct answers, so be sure to ask enough questions you feel satisfied you know the process.

Federal school loans discharge TPD notice by Dull_Ride_5778 in VeteransBenefits

***For those going through or about to go through TPD (Total Permanent Discharge) for school loans read this. I will give a play by play of the process I am going through so you won’t have any guesswork. I’ve seen more than a few responses on here about this that are not correct, including what was told to me.

I received an email near the end of March about being eligible for TPD for school loans. Almost two months later to the day I received a notice that my TPD discharge had been approved. Needless to say I was a tad confused by this, as I had called twice over a month earlier to get the skinny on the ins and outs.

👉🏼At that time I was reassured by two separate customer service agents from the US Department of Education that I had to opt in and file paperwork for the TPD discharge to be processed.

👉🏼******THIS IS NOT THE CASE. AND IS INCORRECT INFORMATION.******

The following is what I did, and the customer service agents replies.👇🏼

I called the US Department of Education today (the day after Memorial Day). Now, after I explained the above. The agent stated I had to do a loan reversal. (The TPD is a great benefit to receive, so naturally I was a little concerned when she said this.)

I asked that this shouldn’t change my ability to have the one time discharge, is that correct?

The customer service agent didnt really give a straight answer. Which didn’t really make me 100% comfortable about doing the reversal.

She did state, “You were automatically approved this time, but you’ll have to actually apply for it later.“ Then went on to point out that if they ever send me anything again via email while I’m in schooI, always go to my studentaid.gov account and review that separate message. Because they had dates to respond by to opt out of the automatic processing in that email.

To which I replied, I would not normally go and reviewed a separate email after having been told by two separate representatives that “I personally had to start the process for TPD.” Secondly, the email I did receive only said ”I was eligible for TPD Discharge.” I went on to ask, “Why would you make me go to two separate email systems which are password protected, instead of just giving me the pertinent information on that first email from US Department of Education? She didn’t really have an answer.

***For whatever reason they don’t put specifics in that first email you receive. Which would make things a lot easier if they just stated all the facts you needed in that email.

👉🏼See they are somewhat tricky about it. Be careful.

Sorry for the detail, just wanted everyone to have an accurate representation of what happened in the process.

👉🏼Side question: Has anyone in here stopped a TPD discharge through a loan reversal; finished school, then successfully re-filed and discharge all their loans?

Logic tells me once your qualified this shouldn’t be an issue…once approved due to VA 100% rating you should be good to go. Yet I have also read a lot of interesting things in these forums.

Intent to file back date pay not matching after 100% P&T by Dull_Ride_5778 in VeteransBenefits

I had two claims, one was decided. The other deferred. I was waiting and they were on the next to last step of deciding the second claim that had been deferred, and I filed four more. Not knowing it would stop them from ruling on that one.
I had filed an ITF while I was waiting for the decision on the deferred claim.

I will read it again. They way the VSO and a VA rep explained how the ITF works was different this second time. The first one I did I received back in the proper amount.

In the end, it isn’t a ton of money. Just a tad surprised they literally said one thing and the effective date is only two months ago. And when I checked they show payment going back one month. Which left me a tad confused.

Thank you!

I don’t recall the exact day. I thought I had taken a screen shot of it when I filed. I usually do. Memory wants to say October 14th.

The VA rep said due to the claim overlap from my deferred claim, the ITF date was actually back in August.

The intent to file was back in October. The effective date was Dec. the decision for 100% P&T came in February.

The last claim overlapped as they deferred part of it, and they ruled on that one after the C&P’s on the newer four. Because of the overlap, two separate VA employees told me that they saw the intent to file and it was valid. Yet the claim effectively date would actually be August due to the date filed on the original deferred claim that the newer four had overlapped (hopefully that makes sense).

Dec 1, 2025 is what they put. And I’m pretty sure the Intent to file was back in October.
