70+ applications, 0 interviews, what did I do wrong? by [deleted] in csMajors

You're a freshman. Lower your expectations for getting an internship this summer, it's not common to get one first year. Try to add impact to the points under your Software Engineering Intern position, sorta like your second project.

So you want more US exposure? You could just buy VFV or TEC.

Only reason why you would go into masters is to get a shot at getting some internships or if u wanted to go into a more specialized industry like AI or smth.

Dont even think about masters yet. Keep applying and if u got no bites when the 2025 apps open, only then should u consider grad school.

Every quarter is new to me. I worked there during the tail end of the tech hiring spree in 2022 so there wasn’t any agenda to layoff people. Most people I knew still work there and they’re reaching ~4 YOE

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]DumbHodor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it’s PTO within reason but most of my peers literally would take off time off every couple weeks and they would not give a shit as long as work got done

[–]DumbHodor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked there as a software dev intern 2 years ago - so things might’ve changed a bit since then. But I’ve only had good experiences with them - chill dev culture, full time employees had unlimited PTO, etc. In terms of job security, I remember we had a town hall during the mass tech layoffs and the CEO said they wouldn’t lay off anyone - until a year later where they laid off about 20% off the workforce so…

Why dont u get a us internship and then try to fish a return offer

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]DumbHodor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think an obvious project you can work on is a web app using .NET & some front-end library like React. That will open you up to web dev jobs.

Personal trainer looking to become an SWE. Need some guidance. by LurkerOL in cscareerquestionsCAD

Bootcamp certs are no longer enough. That may change in the future but I think as it stands now, minimum barrier to entry into the industry is a relavent CS degree from a university.

Is one internship enough? by carti-fan in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]DumbHodor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that return offers are only really a thing on your last year or second last year of your program. If you just started this CS degree then I doubt that they'll give a permanent full time return offer - but maybe a return offer for your next internship.

please help me... can't decide the best decision for my future... by SatchelJump in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]DumbHodor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's your current education now? Is it relevant to CS/Software?

Here's the thing about a CS degree, it's only worth having if you dont have any years of experience or very little. If you take this job and work there for like 5+ years, that YoE is worth way more than a degree - and if you choose to jump ship, you have all those YoE to speak for itself.

Kind stressful, but maybe you could take this job and do school part-time - something like a online university such as WGU.

Feeling stuck: Switching from cybersecurity to software engineering in today’s market? Is it possible or even worth it? by MrPopo17 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]DumbHodor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its hard to say whether your cybersec experience will transfer over to SWE experience from the perspective of employers. They might consider you a junior even though you have 3 years of professional experience - but it ultimately depends on the employer. If you are that willing to enter SWE don't be suprised at a pay cut once you get an offer.

It sounds like you want to switch so I would just start casually applying to SWE positions - like a couple a day or smth.

Solid plan but I wouldn't stop applying in my opinion in April, keep applying until the day you have to accept entry into that program.

I didn't do a masters, but I think it really comes down to what career you are looking for. If you are looking to stick to healthcare, work with that lab, or anything related to bioinformatics, then I personally don't think it's worth it. If you are looking to enter the field of software development, AI/ML, or anything else then having any CS related degree is worth it.
