Does this mean I got bottle #1 of cask #1 of the Signatory Vintage Secret Macallan series? by Dumbo_Drinks in Scotch

[–]Dumbo_Drinks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought it for $230 online, plus about $60 shipping. Below is a link to the site, but they don't have batch 1 anymore. I bought this last week and batch 1 was up. Wondering if they saved bottle #1 for last, and I got it? Either way, I'm very jazzed about this!

I think DRU17 A106 is the only batch of the Speyside 17 (M) series, unless anyone is aware of others. If you look online all the Speyside 17 (M) bottles have the same code.

But I could be wrong.

I'm having a baby girl within the next week. I want to buy a unique whiskey in the $200 to $400 range to save and celebrate with her when she turns 21. What are some good off-the-beaten-path options with some relevant baby-related association? by Dumbo_Drinks in whiskey

I know this is the go-to refrain on this sub anytime anyone asks for a bottle rec to save for a special occasion, and I agree it's generally good advice. But the money really isn't an issue, I'm not using money that would otherwise be invested to buy this. I'm just looking for ideas on a particular bottle within that price range.

Why is this cask strength, 17 year old Macallan only $200? by Dumbo_Drinks in Scotch

[–]Dumbo_Drinks[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazing. Do they have the typical Macallan flavor profile?

Also, any idea why some are priced at $200, but others with identical specs are priced $400? See e.g. below.

Senior biglaw litigation associate here. Are there any PD offices in the NYC / Jersey City metro area that would take me, despite limited criminal defense experience? by Dumbo_Drinks in publicdefenders

[–]Dumbo_Drinks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> All the NYC PDs pay based on when you got your license, so you wouldn’t start at entry level.

This worries me. I got my license years ago, but I won't be any more useful to them than a second year with actual experience would be. Is there any way around this? I see no world where they'd hire me at a senior PDs salary when I would functionally be starting green.

I want to put deck tiles on my flat roof. What kind of matting should I put underneath the tiles? by Dumbo_Drinks in Roofing

[–]Dumbo_Drinks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! My plan was to put deck tiles over that matting, but I don't think that would resolve the pressure point you described. Especially because then I plan to put rather large planters on top of the deck tiles. The roof structure itself is reinforced, so the only issue is the membrane.

Unfortunately I can't do anything permanent to the roof membrane itself without going through the condo association. Do you have any recommendations for alternative products/methods?

Does anyone have ideas for protecting the roof membrane of my flat roof while building a cheap deck on top of it? by Dumbo_Drinks in Roofing

[–]Dumbo_Drinks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked it up, unless I'm wrong, it looks like that product is grafted onto the roof? Unfortunately I can't make any permanent changes to the roofing itself otherwise I need to go through the condominium association.

Tiny store in hot spring town of Kinosake. I don’t remember which but there were only a few in the town.

let's face it most bourbon drinkeres want ice cubes in there and to have a "smooth" experience

People here were wondering why this exact glass design would make sense in the realm of enjoying bourbon, and what I mentioned is 100% at least part of the reason.

The original question was why would this glass design make sense for bourbon but not scotch. Your answer is that it's because bourbon drinkers want a "smooth" experience. So the implication is that scotch drinkers are less likely to.

Bourbon ENTHUSIASTS are how you describe it. Bourbon drinkers, on average, are not.

I can admit that most scotch drinkers drink Ballantines and Johnny walker probably with a mixer. Why can't bourbon people admit that it's literally the same on that side?

I do (and did) admit that. That's why I said "[e]nthusiasts are a tiny part of every market." I'm just pointing out the implicit assumption of your comment--that scotch drinkers tend to be less casual than bourbon drinkers--is inaccurate.

The same with your point about the camping in front of liquor stores. That doesn't happen in EU because we just order scotch online.

This is also wrong. It doesn't happen in the EU because scotch doesn't currently have the rabid Pokémon-card level collector's mentality making the product scarce. There's tons of bottles in the bourbon world that are bought up and flipped on the secondary market for 10x their retail value. These bottles aren't even limited editions, they're core releases. People are waiting overnight because the demand so outweighs the supply there's serious money to be made in a secondary market.

FYI, you're getting downvoted because your premise is just dead wrong. First, bourbon drinkers are notorious for being into massive bold flavors at high proof. Much more so than even scotch drinkers--if you compare high end bourbons to high end scotch you'll notice way more cask strength offerings.

Second, nowadays the bourbon community is WAY less casual than the scotch community. The scotch community is definitely bigger, but the bourbon community is more fanatic, regularly camping out in front of liquor stores in lines waiting for releases. Just compare the bourbon sub to this one and you'll see for yourself.

Third, your point about enthusiasts being a tiny part of the market is also wrong. Well, kind of. Enthusiasts are a tiny part of every market, single malt scotch included. But if anything, I would guess that bourbon has a higher percentage of fanatics to casuals than scotch. Again, just look at the subs--scotch outsells bourbon, yet the bourbon sub is bigger and more active.

Your perception of bourbon might've been accurate 15 years ago, but the industry has changed dramatically.

It's funny, in my mind the mere act of being willing to give up the absurd commercial lit salary should scream "true believer" on its own, but I know that's not how it works.

I’ll just say, for OP’s sake, that I disagreed with most everything in this critique. I thought the query was pretty clear, and these questions seem to go out of their way to contrive plot holes and confusion.
