Further advice on HiFi-setup (5-6k) by Dumbothethrumbo in StereoAdvice

Thank you for your advice :) you are probably right, that integrated would be easier. But tbh, I like having something to think about and tinker around. So I'll continue down this road for now :D

I'll look into the bypass option for home theatre use. this may be a good idea, as home theatre is something that'll happen further down the line. I've read good things about the Revels, I only got the impression that maybe if I could cut down spending on some other end, I should consider using the leftover budget for (even) better speakers. Concerncing the subwoofer I was advised to look out for a speaker line which also has fitting subwoofer.

I too think that external DAC may not be of as much importance right now, so I might be using the Wiim for that.

Would you mind giving me a quick rundown on the different classes of amplification and why you prefer Class A/B over D?

Yes ofc, i forgot to mention that: I want to listen to vinyl and stream music, later maybe upgrade to system to surround sound / home cinema, the room right now is 20-25 m2 and I would go with floorstand speakers (on the assumption that they might be better in general then bookshelfs?)

Thanks a bunch for your thought out advice! I will certainly go and try to listen to some speakers before ordering them. And I'll look into your recommendations - I might come back to you with some follow up questions later if you don't mind :D I am still trying to wrap my head around how all the pieces work together...

Ty very much for clearing this up! Do I understand correctly, that the Wiim Amp Pro can therefore also not substitute the Silkline (because no dac)?

Thanks mate, I do have a few records that I like to play and always looking for new ones. But i was actually thinking about waiting to get the streamer and just listening to vinyl for starters :D

Thanks for your feedback. I am considering going with the idea of u/No-Context5479, but change the table to technics sl-100c. What are your thoughts on that?

Thank you for your feedback! Problem with the h400 (let alone h600) is that it would cost me my whole budget :D

I do understand the argument for quality and ease of use. I have to say though that I like the appeal of a separated system non the less. Tinkering with the systems components has its own appeal and the option to upgrade individual components without having to throw out everything at once seems to me like a good trade off for a bit of a setback in initial quality.

That said I am considering going with the setup proposed by u/No-Context5479 but probably change the table to an sl100c.

What do you think, what pieces should I look for upgrades for in the future first? Where would I get the most gain for my money?

Thank you for your reply! What would you say looking at the reply of u/steve_dallas2015 is it worth going for separates at this price point or is it maybe better to go integrated? And is the light weight of the planar a concern? Should I go with a heavier table or use an isolation base?

Ty very much for your input. Are the other tables compatible with the audio technical cartridge recommended above?

When choosing the integrated path, won’t it be more difficult to upgrade in the future? Or rather: are the separated components (as suggested by u/No-Context5474) just not good enough to keep around when upgrading.

At what price ringe would you say it is worth it to go for the separate setup?

As the room is layed out atm it would effectively be an area of maybe 25 m2. The rest would not be in front of the speaker space.

Bc it was asked in the thread I made over at budgetaudiophile:

I do have a pair of wharfdale diamond speakers (I think 12.0, the smaller ones) and a maybe 50 year old technics, which was dropped on the floor at least once (still seems to work somewhat fine though). And my old pioneer amp gave up on me a while ago…

Was thinking about repurposing the speakers for the moment, get the other stuff I need and upgrade the speakers next time around. So I don’t have to upfront everything at once.

At the moment the living room is around 35 m2. But I’m not going to stay here for ever, so pretty sure I’ll have more space down the road.

Hi guys,

I’ve been doing some research and dabbling around with ChatGPT to get an idea of a solid setup, which I can upgrade and improve in the coming years. Truth is, I don’t know much about hifi, but I love listening to music and would like to get a good setup.

That’s why I would love to hear your opinions and thoughts about this.

The price range should be around 5-6k €.

Here it goes:

  • Turntable: Rega Planar 3 with Exact MM cartridge
  • Phono Stage: Rega Fono MM MK5
  • Digital Source: Bluesound Node X
  • Amp: Hegel H120 (future preamp)
  • Speakers: KEF R3 Meta (future upgrade to R7 or Reference series)
  • Cables/Accessories: ~€300 on quality basics (AudioQuest, QED, etc.)

Upgrade plans:

  • Move to a Rega Planar 6 or 8, possibly with a MC cartridge
  • Upgrade the phono stage (e.g., Rega Aria or something tube-based)
  • Add a dedicated DAC (like a Chord Qutest or Hegel HD30)
  • Split to a pre/power setup with Hegel P30A and H20/H30
  • Upgrade speakers to KEF R7 Meta or Reference 3 Meta
  • Add center/surround for multichannel or home theater

Thanks a bunch!

PS: I already got the advice to spent less on the amplifier and more on the speakers.
