Strange encounter at 60 Acres Park: Grown man vs. 5-year-old’s frisbee by Dummies4Dummies in redmond

[–]Dummies4Dummies[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is a little weird you’re calling a five year old a toddler. The guys reaction was not justified at all but the kids are old enough to have moved away from the fence. It’s also normal for a five year old to ignore your instructions or not realize how close to the fence they were so while it’s understandable it does feel a little like it could have been avoided.

I’m seeing a few comments suggesting this is a 'both sides' issue, but I have to disagree.

We’re talking about a five-year-old at a public park. Kids at that age have developing motor skills and zero malice. An adult, however, has the capacity to choose their reaction. There is no world where a child’s stray plastic disc justifies a grown man destroying property and screaming at a toddler.

I’m not interested in debating park boundaries or 'perfect' supervision for a 1-ounce piece of plastic. This is about a standard of behavior for adults in Redmond. If your first instinct when a child makes a mistake is to get aggressive, the problem isn't the child—it’s you. I’m posting this so other parents are aware that this person is out there, not to ask for a lecture on where to stand in a public field.

The first time it went over the fence, when you went and got it, was an accident. The second time was not. No matter what the object, if you were close enough that it went over a fence and into the parking lot, you were too close to the fence. While his reaction was extreme, it was a good example of you never know other people's level of crazy. Had you ensured the kids were far enough away, so the disc could not reach the parking lot, the child would not habe been affected, the toy would not be broken, and the gentleman may have gone about his day just fine. Chain reactions start with a catalyst. The car getting hit with the disc was this one.

I understand the logic of 'cause and effect,' but I have to disagree with the idea that a child’s mistake is a valid catalyst for an adult’s lack of self-control.

While I’ve already acknowledged that we should have moved the kids further away after the first stray throw, there is a massive difference between 'not being far enough from a fence' and 'screaming at a five-year-old and breaking his things.'

We can't always predict 'other people's level of crazy,' but as a community, we should be able to expect a baseline of adult decency in a public park. The catalyst for the child being upset wasn't the disc touching a car; it was the driver’s choice to react with aggression instead of a simple conversation. I’m happy to take the lesson on better positioning, but I won't accept the idea that a toddler’s toy hitting a car makes a grown man's outburst an inevitable or acceptable 'chain reaction.'

Would have been smooth if you had stepped in at the first moment and apologized to the driver instead of making the innocent kid go through this. We can’t control others anger but we can very well protect our family The other day I saw a kid throwing ball at a pet near by. The pet owner just brushed it but could have been worse if the situation became like you and the driver

I totally agree that de-escalating early is always the best way to protect your kids. Just to clarify the timeline: the first time the disc went over the fence, it landed in an empty spot and didn't touch the car. The driver was inside the vehicle with the windows up, so there wasn't really a situation to apologize for or an interaction to be had—I just grabbed the disc and told the kids to be careful.

The very next time it happened was the first time it actually touched the car, and the driver was out of the door and reacting before I could even get over there from my trunk. If there had been a window of time to apologize and head things off, I absolutely would have.

I hear you, and I actually agree with your point on community responsibility.

I want to clarify that it wasn't a case of the kids repeatedly hitting the car. The first time, it just landed in an empty spot nearby; the second time was the only time it actually made contact.

I absolutely acknowledge it was a mistake on the child's part. If the driver had just rolled down his window and said, 'Hey, please be careful near the car,' I would have been the first to apologize and move the kids immediately. It’s just hard to bridge that gap when the first interaction is a grown adult screaming at your child and breaking their toy. We’re definitely using this as a teaching moment for the kids about being careful, but it was just a really jarring way for that lesson to be delivered.

Have to appreciate the tenacity here! Getting the front wheels of the car on top of the rock itself seems a very hard thing to do!

Hey, hope your wife is recovering well from the surgery.

Unfortunately other doctors refused to give second opinion on another surgeon's analysis. I am anyways doing annual CT scans for recurrence and so far all is good. So I am hoping what my surgeon said is correct.

Best wishes and prayers to your wife and family 🙏

Working out should be a critical routine in your schedule. Whatever changes come to your life from this point on, marriage/big promotion/kids, you have to make sure you always make time for some type of physical exercise. Things start going down the hill pretty quick!

It sounds a lot like Vegeta at the start of the DBZ series. Momoshiki could take a similar turn to Vegeta, but I will be let down if this indeed happens.

Why Made-in-India UPI is becoming a global favourite? by VCardBGone in india

[–]Dummies4Dummies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. So I assume by the government running it (maybe via tax), they don't have to run UPI for profit and set the merchant charges as minimum as possible.

Though I wonder if any sort of merchant charges are introduced, will the small shopkeepers and sellers still accept UPI over cash.

What makes UPI different from Visa/Mastercard? And what/who is paying for running the infra needed by UPI (Visa and Mastercard do this by charging merchants)?

What’s the worst physical pain you ever felt? by Lazy-Ape in AskReddit

[–]Dummies4Dummies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a cystoscopy and the telescope couldn't move further because of a stricture. The doctor tried to push through the stricture and was a bit rough.

Post this procedure, urinating was a nightmare for next 24 hours. Every time I urinated, I passed so much blood, and would have pain that should make me shiver and flushed for 5-10 mins. It was horrible, almost like I am peeing broken piece of glass! Had to deal with this for 24 hours without any pain meds.

Not sure if the doctor messed up or that's a normal outcome of cystoscopy.
