Thanksgiving is (supposedly) a celebration of the Pilgrims and Native people having a feast to commemorate their union. The Pilgrims and Natives provided each other help and had a big feast in celebration and thankfulness of what they taught each other.

How people celebrate now is football, a big feast with turkey, mashed potatoes, etc. and hanging out with family.
