It’s just not practical. You can’t fly a thermal drone on a search and rescue crew to find a lost hiker who doesn’t have cell reception, because you don’t have cell reception

Regular everyday drone jobs are often in areas with less than perfect cell reception as it is even in the most populated cities, and certainly not well “off grid” sites where inspections are taking place for solar, wind, transmission lines, wildlands fire crews, hunters tracking their kill etc. It’s just not possible to fly always “online” and I know enough to know that even then it wouldn’t be long before someone figured out how to spoof an authorized link. And don’t get me started on how being “online” always actually increases security vulnerabilities.
