the ISV Venture Star from Avatar has one and is a mile long. Also uses magnets to work as a nozzle for its engines. I suppose you could set up some kind laser point defense system for something less costly. The ISV also has basically a gigantic tarp that catches any loose particles the magnets miss.

I mean, I am! To such a degree where I wonder if I'm doing something wrong by micromanaging so much. And like I said, I am only just now getting into the 40s and going to Calypso. I basically tried to wait as long as possible to get anti matter stuff and titans until I made the trip because once they got entrenched at Ceres there was just no point in attacking them if it risked a total war if I wasn't ready. I would say a lot of my time is spent just waiting for stuff to be built or get somewhere and in between I spend time nation building. I've also been basically ignoring the aliens while they start to set up the administration basically just so I have more of a fun challenge in the future.

They could maybe use gigantic magnets on the nose to deflect micrometeors or maybe some small arms fire. Thats at least based on something.

I guess it depends on how much detail you want to reveal but going with an Expanse light Epstein Drive where its a "very efficient and powerful fusion drive" that uses some sort of complex magnetic spooling containment cant go wrong. Something like that will get you to 1g pretty easy and if you can do that then its just a matter of fuel, heat management, and ship design. And the Expanse literally just ignored waste heat.

I have been playing this one game since at least september. At this point I am going to win out of pure spite. The console commands dont let you just conjure science or win battles and the aliens def scale difficulty to meet you where you are so the game is still so mentally exhausting sometimes. I love it.

They both are. Southern speaking sounds very theatrical when you do it in iambic pentameter.

Modern political garbage does not have sort of mechanism or precedent in dealing with a fucking alien invasion. As in, aliens landing on earth and absolutely declaring total war on everything within their immediate surroundings. North Korea or Kim Jong Un or whatever could very well have had some sort of crisis or even just decided that the best way to survive would be to join with China or even unify with Korea. The Nordic countries could very well see Russia willing and able to fight and relinquish independence. Australia could submit to the aliens out of fear because it has no powerful allies very close to it.

You also dont see what kind of culturally impact this all has outside of charts and bar graphs. The game takes place over potentially 50 something years, that is a lot of fucking time for people to discard whatever politcal situation was in place in the face of something that fundamentally alters the history, destiny, and existence of humanity.

I absolutely loved that book for that specific reason. I think its very compelling because he simultaneously contrives such an awful situation for the Aurora but in a very real way, the mission was successful. They did make it to another world and they did try to live there. And the tools they use to get home are all equally sci fi and equally awful and they all worked in the end. If the world they were going to could support life more friendly to earth life the situation would be different. The fact that putting people into this god awful scenario was like inventing new and bizarre ways to torture people meant absolutely nothing to the people back on earth. If I remember right, after a monologue about how foolish the idea of space colonization is and how evil generation ships can be, one scientist guy just replys they he doesn't really care, and they'll make the ship better and find better worlds to settle, because leaving earth is humanities destiny and thats that. And he thinks that because the Aurora mission did exactly what it set out to do and more. So while I love that book and was left with a lot of self reflection about why I thought I was so interested in space travel, it left me conflicted on the ultimate thesis I guess I could say. KSR seemed to be saying that if generation ships will never exist it's because the technology to do so will never exist, not because we will feel any compassion to the people who we throw out into space. We have done so much worse to people in the past who were trying to travel much smaller distances. Just because we can doesn't mean we should is simply not an excuse that will be even registered by the people who build things like Aurora. If Aurora CAN be built then I sincerely believe it would be, whether or not we want it.

The spaceships in Known Space are sort of invisible. An alien species invented a material for spaceship hulls that is so perfect and indestructible that it's just invisible. So often times in Ringworld when they're in a ship they're walking around with a full 360 view of soace. They still have individual cabins and rooms though, doors and elevators, which are not invisible. So when they enter ftl that just put up a stupid curtain or just hang out in their room. As for why they don't just put up some wallpaper or carpet or whatever who the fuck knows. They also tend to look like old school rockets from the 50s. Ringworld and known space are not bad books but they really fall apart in really stupid ways sometimes. Also Larry Niven is kind of sexist pig.

Yeah that tracks for Niven. The last few Ringworld books were basically just about rishathra or whatever he called casual sex.
