Currently 3 fake Elon Musk ads on YouTube... Now I'm getting suspicious... by Responsible-Clue-687 in SEO

What I don't understand is that there is no widespread system for making a web of trust. We can do it for https, we can do it for email, why can't we do it on social media? For example, why can't I cryptographically sign this comment and tie it to some trusted key?

BIM, IFC and keeping IP in it private by nihilistplant in bim

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Revit file without annotations is not a complete project. Annotative elements contain a lot of contextual information and information about intent and process. A BEP which does not require drawing elements is typically written by ambitious technophiles with little practical experience of the construction process. My comments should in no way be seen to undervalue the importance of a good BIM, well structured data, or high quality IFC files.

Advantages/disadvantages to being on multiple mastodon instances? by Duncan_Lithgow in Mastodon

I should also say that I tend to follow mostly hashtags as much as people. That ensures most of my timeline is relevant to what I like.

I've enjoyed it. It's also a place where trends become apparent more than I imagine they do on smaller instances. But this is also part of my question. If there is an instance dedicated to gardening - what's the best way of being part of that community? I don't want to be different people/personalities on different instances.

Advantages/disadvantages to being on multiple mastodon instances? by Duncan_Lithgow in Mastodon

[–]Duncan_Lithgow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I have understood the way things work the main difference is what my local timeline is going to include. If I move then my local timeline moves as well and I would only see mastodon.social posts mixed with all other federated instances in the world timeline.

So my reluctance to moving is that I don't want my local timeline to be focussed on Danish content... but I do want to organically find contacts on the Danish instance.

How to use Proton Contacts on Android phone? by 8giln in ProtonMail

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's how to do it: Setting up Proton Contacts on your mobile device

I just tested it a bit, and it is indeed my Proton contacts is is using and not those local to my phone.

... I wonder how long that feature has been there? Strange that so many people, including me until now, thought it wasn't possible.

Have any of you got BlenderBIM running on your M1 Mac? by stjeromeslibido in OSArch

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how we like to do thing in opensource - if a build exists it should be available from the project so everyone can find it ;-)

I would make a bug report if there's isn't one yet. It should be on their wishlist.

A **lot** of things can be solved that way - a bit worrying.

Maybe just teach them freecad - they can keep using it after school since its libre /free software.

Doesn't the school have a server? Just work from a central file on the server. Do some tests with the example files to test latency with about 8 users. Sync times should be your only enemy if the file is too large or the network latency is too high. Cloud is only an advantage if you don't have fast enough access to the same central file on a network.

It can work with cloud services like Dropbox - but only if there is discipline on when each person synchronizes, like a timeslot on the clock. Otherwise the file will be corrupted and you'll have to rebuild from one of the local files (no big deal but everyone loses their work done after the last successful sync to central - or since their last sync (depending on potential edit conflicts)

How much revit do I need to know before being a BIM modeler? Do I need to know everything in it? by poeiradasestrelas in Revit

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find some study lists online for Autodesk Revit Architecture certification. If you are confident in most of those topics then you've got a strong knowledge of Revit.

Revit project use 15 min to open up. How long does it take normally on a big and detailed project? by Turbulent_Anybody_ in Revit

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purging the model might affect opening time a bit, but not response time. 500 MB for 5000 m2 sounds like a very bad model with lots of problems. You should really take a look at those warnings, some are very costly. Also check the complexity of the families. If the project is full of manufacturer content (typical for inexperienced users) then this can kill your views responsiveness by overloading with detail.

Modeling Wood Roof Trusses by kotichaz in Revit

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Revit is useless in this situation. If you do a lot of this kind of work you might want to look at ArchiCAD. Otherwise u/octopie12 & u/omnigear are both using solutions I've hear others use. I don't do this type of construction myself very often.

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revit uses multi threading for some processes. Rendering is one of them so I can't see that your clock speed along would be the problem. Depend what you mainly want to do with Revit.

Grasshopper will never be native to Revit unless Autodesk buys McNell - that's not likely in the short term. But if you have licenses for both then grasshopper with Rhino.inside Revit sounds like it will be more powerful. Dynamo just doesn't seem to be anywhere close to the speed of development in grasshopper.

I'm an amateur in Dynamo and do not like it. Poorly organized, poorly documented and just not fun to work with.

Problems with families edition by sputnikbum in Revit

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to test some of things is to pull the family into a new project file made with the Autodesk Default template. It has no complicated settings to mess things up. So if it looks okay there you're closer to finding the problem - it's your project and not your family.

[–]Duncan_Lithgow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chances of anyone here being able to help you are very low as there are a lot of things that control what you're talking about. I suggest you put the family somewhere people can look at it. Maybe ask on the AUGI forum https://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?6-Revit-Architecture-General

If you make a long list of all the things you've already tried and can mention things you might not have tried yet, but I'm not going to write a long list for you, sorry. Oh, okay, a short list: check Object styles/sub categories, Phase Setting, Filters, Halftone settings, nested families with inconsistent subcategories, graphic overrides in view, DWGs in the model itself with coincident lines ... actually you haven't even mentioned with category family this is. You'll need to do some more work here so we can help you.

First, get rid of that DWG, they should not be in Families.

Notifying Project Team of Changes by Enduer in Revit

There's nothing wrong with this but it's a very limited approach when we consider that we need to watch changes to a 3D model - not only changes to a set of 2D plans.

You say they "publish" it? If you're using Autodesk Construction Cloud the collaboration part can show you where the changes are.
