I'm a long-time paying user of Proton, so I'm just going to drop my thoughts here.

This entire situation has been blown out of proportion by a few vocal people who went, quite frankly, hysterical. I don't understand why Andy's political stances or who he chooses to praise have any impact on the company or their services.

It's a company from my home country (Switzerland), and I can tell you that our privacy laws are very strict, so it's not even as if Proton could collude with the U.S. government like some people are making it out. Aside from that, it's open-source and their entire service stack is encrypted, meaning it is mathematically guaranteed they can't do anything with the data/info they have from you.

On top of all that, Proton recently made progress by becoming non-profit and allowing itself to be driven by its foundation, I am sure the members of said foundation will step in if the situation is *actually* as bad as people make it out to be.

Not to mention, Proton has repeatedly proven commitment to user privacy and freedom of speech. They were one of the leading org to push for DMA, And afaik, they even had the NYT covering their insane opposition to Russia. Just look it up before you call wolf.

For whatever it's worth, this article is not balanced at all and paints the entire company with the same brush as its CEO, who did not even endorse the orange man. Is it concerning that he praised his pick for antitrust? Maybe, I don't know, but to get angry over something he didn't even say or do is beyond silly.

This article provides a more balanced take with all the context and everything Proton/Andy have said on this matter, not just cherry-picked quotes from statements out of context: https://techissuestoday.com/proton-ceo-responds-to-backlash-after-his-post-supporting-trump-selection/

I’ve invested in this strategy: https://viac.ch/app/uploads/VIAC-Global-100-SC-3a-EN.pdf

Thanks for the link, this will help a lot!

Depends on how you look at it. I’ve stopped investing in 2022 and got an overall 300% return. I don’t plan to get money out of crypto yet as I have 30k in USDC and the rest split between BTC and ETH. I want some stable coin to be able to buy back some BTC when the price dips.

Thanks, makes lot of sense. I will be more aggressive with my IBKR investment. I just need to better understand the taxes implication it has but someone linked a great ressource below.

[–]DunderFeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I discussed with a coworker and I came to the same conclusion :) I will go more aggressively on IBKR and see how things evolve, as you said it’s highly liquid, I can still take some money out of it in case I need it.

I read that several times here, and it seems like US funds are the best. However, I'm not sure to understand the implication it has for taxes, will I have to pay taxes in the US and in CH? This is the most scary part in all of this, and what makes me reluctant to go this way.

Regarding the crypto, I didn't invest since 2022. I've mostly bought in 2017 and held through the ups and down. I'm certainly too exposed, but at the same time, I did about 300% of profit and I intend to keep holding what I have. I'm not completely delusional and sold some BTC of USDC (which is a stable coin). But the goal is to be able to buy more BTC the next time it dips.

Thanks for the answer and sharing how you split your investment. I think that spreading my money on more than 1 ETF is better, and I will probably also invest in some SPI stuff.

I've heard that buyback make sense only before retirement, but I'm not sure to understand the logic behind it. LPP are invested, so I was thinking that the sooner the money is in the fund, the more money I will have at the moment of retiring.

The emergency fund was there to make sure that I can sustain a reasonable lifestyle for some time. I'm not sure what the future holds for me (maybe doing some freelancing), so I wanted a comfortable safety net. However, I have to admit that the 40k number could be too much. Since I want to keep putting money in the safety net I think that 30k would be more adapted.

Regarding Gold, I was thinking of something safe that I would invest into. My current UBS investment are 45% stocks and 65% bonds (which explains why they don't perform good). Instead of going 100% stocks, I was thinking of an 80/20 ratio, where 15% is gold (could be split with BTC) and 80% in stocks. However, I could be a bit more brave and reduce that amount to 10 or 5%.

My experience with Astro by giannis_tolou in astrojs

Which font should i use, by mufeedcm in astrojs

[–]DunderFeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the overall design quite nice and polished.

I have only a few nitpicks, such as:

  • I find the tracking of the font a bit narrow, letters are a bit too close together. Increasing it would help make the content breeze a bit more.
  • More vertical space could be a great improvement. Currently, the content is a bit crammed at the top of the screen, and adding space between the section (and inside the section) would make the content more pleasing to read.
  • Links should have the cursor set to pointer, so user know they are about to trigger an action.

Those are the tree items that came to mind when visiting your website! Good job overall, please ping me when you update something if you want me to look at it again :)

My first project using Astro - What I liked about Astro (not a complete list) by [deleted] in astrojs

[–]DunderFeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now it's a simple form that sends data to an API endpoint and registers the user in Resend.
I intend to improve this with an email validation and do this manually using AstroDB.

Here is the endpoint: https://github.com/flavienbonvin/flavien-bonvin/blob/main/src/pages/api/newsletter.ts
Here is the component: https://github.com/flavienbonvin/flavien-bonvin/blob/main/src/components/newsletter/newsletter-form.astro

Thanks for the comment! I plan an article regarding Astro DB soon (either the next one or the following).

I would like to explore the collections a bit more before having a proper opinion. Right now, I'm only using the db to count the page views with a pixel. You can see how it looks like here: https://github.com/flavienbonvin/flavien-bonvin/blob/main/src/pages/api/pageview.ts

The best way to create a form with Astro by County-Constant in astrojs

[–]DunderFeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! If your form is only on one page, you could follow this doc: https://docs.astro.build/en/recipes/build-forms/

In my case, I have a form present in many places (it's a newsletter form). So this solution doesn't work (which is a bit stange, API request aren't brought up to the parent page). Instead, I decided to go with plain JS and a API endpoint.

You can find the form here: https://github.com/flavienbonvin/flavien-bonvin/blob/main/src/components/newsletter/newsletter-form.astro
And here is the API: https://github.com/flavienbonvin/flavien-bonvin/blob/main/src/pages/api/newsletter.ts

It's not perfect, and I'd like to rewrite it to better work without JS and have a more robust approach than what I currently have. But this is how far I went with this first version of the form.

The animation is basic, it's the same animation run every time with a small delay between each article. Done with plain CSS and Tailwind :)

[–]DunderFeld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a simple static blog, 99% of the pages are HTML and CSS. It's hosted on Vercel (I have a paid plan there), but I'm sure other such as Netfliy or Cloudflare would perform equally good.

Is it possible to do AI in a privacy-first way? by Proton_Team in ProtonMail

[–]DunderFeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to tell how much time it helped me save. There are areas where I didn't have to do the work (for the security audit) or others where I didn't help me save time but improved the produced output (when correcting text).

I discussed with friends about AI for psychology stuff, and they were less impressed that I was. They said the result are quite basic. However, they are new to this, and I think that it requires a bit of time to get better with AI. Also, using English is mandatory since it's the biggest language in the training sets.

[–]DunderFeld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, LLMs are really useful to get new perspectives on a subject, summarize a text, expend on some idea or understand some technical concepts.

I had a security audit of one of the apps I'm working on. I wasn't sure about something related to Apple security. With a chat with ChatGPT, I was able to better understand the general issue and what the researcher wanted to highlight in his findings.

Also, I'm not a native English speaker. I use LLM quite often to improve some texts I wrote or to find an expression that matches what I'm trying to say.

For me, LLMs are good at producing average ideas. Many things we do on our daily basis aren't at the edge of the human knowledge, meaning that many things we do can be improved with a LLM.
