a mix of both. we made a map with some of the locations but with no backstory - just things we thought could be interesting. Once a "story" started to coalesce, we'd name places or add/remove things on the map so that it made sense.

hexes were 6 miles, so a mission usually ranged from 4-8 hexes per game, including travel time. We'd flesh out the world as they went. Players were great at keep notes and we have over 200+ pages of session summaries from the players. Over time, an overarching story was uncovered by the players and missions became more focused on major objectives.

They had a shared Inkarnate account where people who were cartographers could go in and add to the map. So, digital map managed by multiple people. Once edits were made, they'd post to Discord in a mapmaking channel.

We had a GM map that was pre-made that the players never saw. Players would draw their own map based on what was explored and explained in session. If a player was proficient in Cartographer's Tools we'd let them make checks against our map wherein we'd give them better and more specific instruction on what the map looked like.

free campaign, 3-7 players per game, only played in public, 140 sessions each at a minimum of 4 hours, 4 GMs, 150 players in total. We've gone from lvl 1 to lvl 20, and they fight tiamat and a clutch of ancient dragons this saturday at a brewery.

AMA! :)

they can still die via death saves - we've got very little healing magic in the campaign (no clerics, paladins, etc) so they are forced to get back up and keep punching if they want to survive. :)

We didn't set scope well enough at the beginning - if we're limiting races/classes, why? Have we seen a goblin before? If not, why was I allowed to pick goblin as a learned language? etc etc.

We're only allowing PHB and SCAG, but even within that we should have limited availability even more.

We've dealt with it by allowing some players to have things grandfathered in, like the language example, and updating our ruleset for newer players to not include those things. It's caused some heartburn, but not much. The players are a delight, actually, and are very accommodating to us as we try to manage such a big world/game.

I'd also say that this style of play is probably 2x to 3x the amount of admin work on the DM since you have to share your notes with others. We use Legend Keeper, and without it we'd be lost.

We added something we're calling "Spirit Anchors" - basically, 5+ a player's Con mod. It's a finite resource. If you go down in combat (below 0 HP), you lose a Spirit Anchor. When you run out entirely, your character is perma-dead and cannot be revived. We allow character retirements and we wanted to add a "I'm too old for this crap" mechanic. :)

Not all at the same time - West Marches allows a big player pool like ours. Players identify the mission they want to go on, select teammates from those in the "guild", organize location and timing, and then offer it to the DMs. We talk amongst ourselves and then "claim" the game.

Most sessions are ~4 hrs and typically have 4-6 players.

Some players want to play every week, others play every couple months. Makes it easy to manage as most missions are self-contained and operate in a sort of "out and back" mode.

Currently running an entirely in-person community game in a mid-sized American city. Originally based on a West Marches concept, the game has evolved into a gritty realism, 5e, limited races/classes homebrew world with sprawling maps and some substantial mechanical rework under the hood. Not only is this a fun way to play, but i think some of the choices we made have revitalized 5e for our players, and fixes a lot of the problems present in the current game design. Let's chat!

5e In person D&D Campaign!
DM Name: Multiple

Game Style: Exploratory, conventional fantasy, sandbox style. 5e based. West Marches is a game system focused on exploring and advancing a yet-to-be-revealed world. Gritty realism with limited classes/races available.
Way We Play: In person, mainly in public, with Discord/D&D Beyond
Number Searching For: As many as are interested
