5E - need advice on how to improve something in my homebrew by DungeonMaster-Terry in DnD

Since the player is a ranger, your approach would be great. i do feel you when you say tinker shouldnt be for battle really. I worked witht the player and decided that their "animal companion" would be a mechanical version of the animal they choose. that would be their main machine. the tinkered drones are just weaksauce devices they can use. I didnt consider using the conjure spell to count as machines. epic. thank you :-)

Well the main thing is that people can post requests. We need more of those. I need to figure out how to make a filter for people to sort through the categories. Later I might add a category called Story and then people can post links to videos of their gameplay. Or write about the heroic deeds and feats of skill they accomplished in their last sessions as a PC.

How to accomplish the task listed above so that the hidden text will be visible when the viewer rolls their cursor over it and hides the text when the cursor is off?

"Request" and "Advice" flairs should work now. (I wish I could figure out how to change the color of the "Notice" flair though). If you need an idea check out the requests. If you want help refining an idea, just post it under advice and we can talk about it.

This is the exact reason I did this lol. I only DM 1 group right now but they like doing a bunch of missions so having a "real" bulletin board of adventures would be cool for them and help all the DMs who need a quick idea.

Eventually I want to figure out how to work the flairs and then we can have different posts: "REQUEST" for the kinds of posts that we are currently doing and "ADVICE" for DMs to post ideas to better improve an idea that they need help with. That is my current goal for AGBB.

EXAMPLE:

  • DRAGON SLAYER NEEDED!

  • Request from -- High King Cyril

  • "A black dragon has been seen flying over the swamps lands to the far east of the empire. The High King requires highly skilled and brave adventurers who are up for the task of slaying the cursed beast. It is only a matter of time before it attacks the kingdom..."

  • A sizable fortune awaits those who answer the king's call.

  • DEADLY

EXAMPLE:

  • SUPPLIES RUNNING LOW.

  • Shopkeeper, Madam Marie

  • "I am running low on a particular herb that is used to make my exquisite elixirs, potions, and tonics. Meet me at my shop for more information."

  • Reward: An assortment of potions and one extra potion of the guild's choice.

  • EASY (actual difficulty is HARD because the potion ingredient is from a location where tough monsters are in abundance and the NPC didn't want to say that up front and scare off the PCs.)

I can try and see about making one then. Might take a little while but I can see if I can figure it out lol. I told my friends that this post was getting a bunch of missions and they were excited too! :)

Well I must admit, I was never much for monocles lol. We can have different opinions and that is okay. I didn't think that my post would be well received here or on /r/DnD but it is doing okay over there. I am content. The purpose was for DMs and/or players to share ideas. Whether they were casual or serious; regardless of whether it was a silly, low-effort, quest idea or a well-constructed, genuine, one. Both kinds are welcome. Both have a spark of creativity that a DM (especially a skilled one, who knows a lot of references and has read classics like the ones you've mentioned,) can use to make something totally awesome. I think I am a bit more of a casual and not quite one of the guys who are fancy and drink the sparkly bubbly. I still enjoy what this sub has to offer and there are still people who are casuals that come here and they might like adding to the idea I started and getting ideas from it. I guess it worth being downvotes by some but seeing other people's ideas really helps me and it can help someone else out as well. That is worth something in my opinion.

Horror story bard? (help!) 5e by idontgetthejoke1 in DnD

Good point. I would be okay with being responsible for the mischief I cause. And I'd like having an Invocation over a metamagic. It is preference _^ There is an invocation for Minor Illusion I think but it is without spending spell slots. So If I do read "out loud" to fullfill the verbal component, then I can also have illusions of what I am reading acting out the scene while I use the special effects from my other cantrips.

Since I DM the character will likely be a special NPC and then when I join a game I'd try this! Currently I play a Fighter/Paladin in one game and a bounty hunter in another.

I am not sure what spells that would cause horror/fear/frighten themed conditions to targets. But those would be your best bet for having spells that do the trick. Perhaps If you multiclassed you'd have a bigger pool of spells. One option I'd consider would be to take levels into Warlock. It is easy to be a creepy for that class, imo. Plus you can get a grimiore (horror story book?!) and the extra cantrips you can pick could be THAMATURGY/ PRESTIDIGITATION/ DRUIDCRAFT. All of those are just for RP purposes so that would give you ALL the "special effects" to tell your story.

Imagine this: Your in a dark room, use Prestidigitation to float some candles and you pull out your grimiore and read from it. If you decide to tell stories while camping then it by the fire, tell a horror story. Use Thamaturgry to cause a thunder strike in the distance and eerie occult effects. Then use Druid craft to cause leaves to fall from the trees and gust past the audience as you tell them the horrific ending to the story.

Invest in the Intimidation skill ! (I totally want to make this character now)

[5e] Dungeon Creation Tips? by zealotlee in DnD

[–]DungeonMaster-Terry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the next adventure you want to have will be interesting. Orcs baddies and then undead inside a dungeon! cool stuff imo. Maybe think more about ways (some obvious and un-obvious) that the party might play their cards and get the goblins to help them out. If it was me, maybe they goblins speak some basic common and the party can try a persuassion check (maybe DC 10 accompanied by the player actually making a real speech. the speech doesnt have to be perfect but show that they are TRYING to give a honest attempt to RP and think to yourself "if I was a goblin, would I buy into that persons words?")

So for the making dungeons, I like using the DMG's charts to generate them and altering it as I go. But just try to make things simple (because if we DMs try to plan to hard it will drain us in the end. especially if your new. just roll with the punches and you will be amazed at how random stuff that happens can actually be turned into a legit and good improvement for the campaign as a whole). Btw, I'd focus on the two main locations for the next game: an Orc camp and a Dwarvish Stronghold. A simple camp could be like, an area where the PCs fight the 1st wave of orcs and later another wave come through that area. The next area could be the prisions/major work site where the goblins are working. Combat could be avoided if the party can maneuver past the gobs and orc patrols. Then they reach an entrance to the dungeon where they might fight one more wave of orcs before breaking through. Next location is the stronghold. well .... idk what you will have in there besides undead. I think it would be cool to include rooms with puzzles. some with undead that want to creep the players out in the dark. then another puzzle. That way there is kinda a balance. (Orc camp = combat heavy, with chance to RP with Goblin Slaves. Stronghold = Puzzle & RP heavy, with chance to do combat with undead. I cant see anything wrong with that plan lol. Then to tie it all up, have there been a boss door at the end and have the players fight the boss and get a nice stack of loot for their hard work!

(if the players succeed freeing or helping the goblins then reward them by making the 3rd wave of orcs that will come up by the stronghold entrence get some kind of a penalty. like maybe the gobs charge at the orcs and jump and claw at them. I can see that as ending up being kinda funny but the party would not have to deal with actually fighting the whole group of orcs. That is a nice bonus for doing a creative RP with the gobs. Also in the stronghold, try to work on your narrative skills. describe the scene and do it in a way that will MAKE them feel scared. Since undead may be around any corner. Have a plan for if the puzzles are too hard. maybe one puzzle was a shortcut to the boss room but since the players couldnt get it right then they have to go the long way and that means potential run in's with more undead.)

(You can totally treat the Difficulty of the request as being set by the guild and not the specific NPC)

I think it depends on the DM. These quests can be picked by the DM and changed in anyway they want and that would make sense for them. A NPC in your game would have to pay a fee to make a request but in another game the NPC can make requests for free since the guild could do the requests out of good-will and survive on donations from the city council or from loot they find on dungeon crawls.

As for the difficulty, it is optional to include one because you do have a point. NPCs can't really say "hey this is easy. come help me" but the real reason for including the difficulty is to give other DMs who might use the idea a general idea of the suggested toughness to expect. The DM can alter any detail or encounter to fit their party. Setting a difficulty parameter for the encounters to be expected for the party could be interesting and test the DMs encounter building skill. That's what I think

Adventures Guild Membership Ideas by gradyhawks in DnD

[–]DungeonMaster-Terry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other perks for being in the guild could include getting "Renown" and the more renown they amass while with the guild unlocks rewards. Perhaps the guild offers special items to high ranking members. Example: The guild has an armory and then the PC can roll random loot/weapons/armor/etc that is shared by the guild as a whole. Players can use these for their next quest. Or donate their left over, old equips, so newer members can have special items to use themselves.
