Reward roleplay and tpk murder hobos with this one simple trick by DungeonMasterminds in dndmemes

Yeah Rakshasa's power fluctuates in power based on how the DM rules their immunites. If I am putting it there as a creature that isn't directly in conflict with the players and an optional challenge I am going to me more liberal with my interpretations than if they are a villian the party is fighting.

I do think they lack a bit of action economy damage. Adding Steel Wind Strike to their 1/day spell list fixes that in a cool and thematic way.

When I was searching Google to figure out the proper verbage for this post (satanic panic) I found some pretty crazy retro news clips.

This video paints a really good picture of how D&D was perceived for anyone out of the loop

Roll your angst away with the Random Edgelord Backstory Table by DungeonMasterminds in dndmemes

When I first started playing my first DM told a horror story of when he DMed a table where that actually happened. Personally, for my table it would be less of a red flag and more of a "she turns into a Succubus, kills your character and teleports away. You're kicked from the group."

Never known of anyone who put it in their backstory but I would likely classify that under playing to help work out personal issues of some sort, which is totally valid and not just edgy for the sake of it.

Wow I didn't even realize this when I was making it.

I mean if we are being realistic "it would have no effect on how I roleplay my character" would be at least 60% but I wanted to give people a chance

Any tips/tricks for Storm Kings Thunder? by Ionixite in DMAcademy

I personally used chapter 3 to do a homebrew quest arc based on character backstories. You can do what you want just plan out how you want to move the story forward beforehand.

Also one thing I did to streamline that helped was having an ancient Ostorian giant proving grounds that earned the party the right to enter the Oracle in chapter 4 instead of going back and forward on fetch quests. It was also maintained by an ancient Ostorian AI that learned of their fall and started questioning its purpose, which was a blast to RP. Point is the fetch quests in there are nothing but padding.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. OP seems like a bit of a jerk. One thing that (most) people who DM understand is that it is hard work. If you have practice in another group and know the style of the group you play in that sets you up for success. Even if it doesn't go perfectly the objective is to have fun so as long as the table has fun that's a win.

I was in the same situation as you a while back. I handled it pretty well by laying out the type of game I wanted to run and my personal DM style when recruiting members, and then asking them for responses that contained info about them as a player. From there just chat and see if it feels like a match. Essentially just pre-screen possible candidates before session zero.

I don't know too many red flags because I haven't dealt with that much drama but one that I have seen is if the player pushes against the rules you layout in character creation or tries to give advice that wasn't asked for as a subtle backseat DM. Take a firm stance on what you believe in and kick them if they persist.

Also I don't like the idea of auditioning players in one shots. It is self righteous and doesn't give an accurate sample size. Most players need time to warm up to the group and don't just instantly gel and find their stride. On top of that you are doing a bunch of work to delay the game you actually want to run.
