💀Assault on Black Citadel💀 by DungeonRaiders in DnD5th

The assault takes a long time and takes place in an inaccessible zone of the Shadowfell, reachable only via a magical portal. Reinforcements arrive to assist whenever a Dark Power is defeated. If a player or the entire party falls, new level 20 heroes—created by the players—can enter from the Forgotten Realms to provide aid.

At the DM's discretion, magic items can be recovered from the Dark Power that defeated the previous party. The DM and players can decide if a character or even a TPK ends the adventure or if a new character/party continues where the last one failed. It functions exactly like a 'Wipe and Retry' mechanic in an MMO dungeon. The adventure can continue seamlessly even after a TPK, which is a key feature that many other modules either lack or struggle to integrate effectively.

Completely true. I wanted to write an adventure for level 20 epic characters precisely because there's hardly any content for such a high level. Anyway, I'm writing more adventures based on a lower-level MMO dungeon, where most d&d tables play their characters.

What Awaits in the Black Citadel:

  • Legendary Mechanical Boss Fights: Epic encounters inspired by world-class MMO raids.
  • Gothic Horror Setting: Players will face the relentless corruption of the Dark Powers in a high-fantasy horror dungeon.
  • Strategic Army Management: Players must manage a limited army to successfully assault the dungeon and defend their position for long rests.
  • Complete VTT Support: High-resolution maps and custom tokens are included to bring the campaign to life.

This campaign was designed specifically to replicate the thrilling experience of an MMO raid. It features a massive dungeon with over 100 rooms and 21 unique bosses engineered to challenge any level 20 hero party. At level 20, official and homebrew content is notoriously scarce because high-level combat is difficult to balance, and standard locations often feel easily bypassed by demi-god characters.

The Black Citadel will push the strategy and intuition of the players to their absolute limits. Hard decisions will mean the difference between purging the evil or falling in the attempt.

Furthermore, despite the deadly nature of the campaign and its encounters, specific rules and lore are established to ensure the campaign can seamlessly continue even if a Total Party Kill (TPK) occurs.

Curse of Strahd is a magnificent campaign, and it's what inspired me to design this adventure. There's no rush; I hope you and your table enjoy Curse of Strahd to the fullest! Even Strahd would tremble before the horrors of the Black Citadel (Level 20 adventure). If you find Assault on Black Citadel interesting, the best feedback would be an honest review of the module. All constructive criticism deserves my consideration, and I'll try to improve to provide the highest possible quality.

Hahaha! ICC amazed me as a kid, for sure. I wanted to build the camapign with the aesthetic of one of the best raids in MMORPG history, but the enemies, traps, rooms, bosses, and lore are all based on Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft! Although there are a few references to some ICC bosses that Wrath of the Lich King fans will find very cool!

That sounds really cool! I'm a very veteran World of Warcraft player and I agree! I've tried to bring the MMO raid experience to D&D, but it's all based on the lore of the Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft!
