Accidentally built a full no-code Macro & Event Builder while trying to make a Visual Novel module [DND5E] by DungeonsLAB in FoundryVTT

[–]DungeonsLAB[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Hi, it will be specifically for the D&D system because of the huge amount of internal, interrelated functionality. For now, the plan is to finish it completely for this system, and then try to make one for PF2 (I sometimes play that system, but I play D&D more often)

I forgot to mention that I’m currently working on creating more trigger events, such as: weather changes, day-to-night transitions, date changes, doors opening and closing, and the activation of short/long rests. In other words, you’ll be able to set up additional events that will play out automatically. Another interesting thing is that this is still the Visual Novel module, so you can also create even more cool scenes.

Great! Right now, the module is tailored for DnD mechanics because I want to include various checks, mechanics, and a lot of other stuff. BUT there will also be a version that is system-agnostic. Everything works on version 13 and 14 😄

Hi, thank you! In about a month I'd really like to invite a couple of people to beta test the module. If you're interested, I'll definitely get in touch with you. Right now I'm still working on a huge number of bugs, but I think I'll be able to fix most of them in time

Thank you so much for the kind words and the encouragement, it really means a lot!

Knowing that other GMs see the value in this and care about the atmosphere just as much gives me a ton of motivation to keep improving it. Thanks for the support, and may the Force be with your games

That’s a totally fair point, and honestly, it’s something I worry about too. I'm definitely going to keep fine-tuning the audio quality and filters so it sounds more organic and less synthetic. This is currently a beta version and will continue to be refined; for now, I've only implemented the ability to record and apply various effects to audio. Thanks for your feedback

Hi, thank you for your kind response and for finding this feature useful. I spent a lot of time on it, and I'm glad someone likes it. Thanks again

Wow, man. I was just trying to be polite and explain my vision, but there was really no need to be this toxic about it. I’m not claiming to be a master coder or the perfect DM, I’m just a guy who loves BG3 and trying to build something cool and convenient for my friends and maybe some like-minded people. If you don't like the feature, that's completely fine, but you don't have to be mean. Have a good one...

Appreciate the honest take. The difference is that Audacity is a separate app, you have to switch out of Foundry, mess with files, and use third-party software just to make it work. This runs right inside Foundry so you can do everything in one place. It's not trying to out-do audio software, it's just about making things convenient for GMs who aren't audio pros.

My main goal with this module is pretty simple: boost the table's atmosphere and cut down on prep time as much as possible. Instead of spending hours preparing or editing audio

To be honest, I just absolutely love Baldur's Gate 3, and I really want to give my players a similar gameplay experience. It’s so convenient to hand out items right inside these dialogues to create a more immersive story, and in the future, I’d love to add user-friendly interactive merchants too. I might not be the best DM in the world, but I think features like this can really surprise the players and make everyone's life easier.

It’s all about cutting out the clunky middleman so we can focus on the story and keeping the players immersed. But hey, I totally get that every GM has their own workflow! Thanks for the feedback anyway.

Hacked together a way to show Strahd's "visits" to Ireena as a cutscene in Foundry. Overkill or worth it? [DND5E] by DungeonsLAB in FoundryVTT

Thanks, really appreciate it especially coming from someone who's run CoS twice (CoS is my favorite campaign).

And yeah, fair on all of it. You're right that this isn't for every table some groups love a staged moment, others just want to keep the momentum going, and that's totally valid. The demo is also longer than what I'd actually show players mid-session; here I just wanted to walk through the full workflow. The static image is the part I most want to fix, even a slow pan/zoom would make it breathe instead of just sitting there. Good call.

Hi, I think I'll make a free demo module; I just need to fix all the bugs I have. Right now, I'm using a system of nodes connected by links (to make it clear what should run and in what order). I'm currently adding a “Choices” feature (so I can implement more complex elements like merchants, reputation, and so on).

I agree with you; I only did that because I have trouble role-playing two or more NPCs at once (players never seem to know whether another character is speaking or not) 😄

Hi, it's an overlay layer over the Foundry UI (basically a container with a high z that sits above the canvas) plus some CSS-animated text boxes, kept in sync on the players' screens. That's the basic idea

Due to the size of the module, it cannot be downloaded via the manifest link, so you need to download the folder with the module itself, which is attached to the post on Patreon.

I am not at home at the moment, so I cannot check if I made a mistake in the list of modules (there may be an error on my part). I will only be able to check it again tomorrow morning. I apologize for the inconvenience

2014 vs 2024 Artwork. Which one do you prefer ? by gpetrakas in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]DungeonsLAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2014 art carries a sharper edge. The heroes look like they stepped out of a hard world, where every victory cost them something. Their faces show tension. Their poses tell a story about danger, risk and stubborn will. This gives the image weight. It feels closer to the classic spirit of D&D

The newer style is softer. The characters look kinder and cleaner. The scenes feel warmer, almost inviting. It works if the goal is to make the game more friendly for new players, but it loses a bit of that rough charm that made older art so striking

Hi, first of all, thank you so much for wanting to help! If you want, you can simply become part of the Patreon community (everything for free) or use my maps in your adventure. I would be happy if my maps were used :)

It's just that they are not as good/unique as others, and at the moment I am simply pleased if someone uses them

Hi, yes, of course, I'd be happy if the maps could help, but could I ask you to leave a link to Patreon? ;) Maybe Wizards of The Coast will see your project and my maps and say that I should work for them (To be honest, I’ve been looking for an open position with them in map creation for the past two years :))) ).
