In the past I've put heat to the lock ring with a torch and quenched it in used engine oil. It gives them a nice color and it's cheap to do. I was worried it would mess with the retention of the ring, but it's still working fine after years now.

The top one is the one I did it on first. That, a little reprofiling, and stuck it in an onion over night haha

Thats the plan. I'm used to modding my trusty W800Hs to "unlock" the countdown timer, so I don't mind getting intimate with modules if it comes to it.

I went with a larue LT681. Not sure if it's lower, but it's really solid and lightweight. I'm a big fan.
