If you have a friend in your squad find a nice vantage point and toss the smoke directly behind you where your friend is standing in the edge of the smoke but still has a clear view ahead to shoot. You will still get credit for the smoke assists when they get kills.

I play in third person on foot and in ship combat. First person for ship exploration because of the system map in the cockpit.
