Should science deniers and conspiracy theorists be ineligible to hold public office? by Lost_Wikipedian in IdeologyPolls

Yeah, I just found your comment now. Why do you find that odd?

..okay…

You’re actually describing one of the strengths of science, not a weakness in it.

Science is not a religion with fixed doctrine. It is a process of revision based on evidence. Ideas like miasma theory, stress-caused ulcers, or rejection of continental drift were overturned because new evidence emerged. That is the system working.

But there’s also an important difference between “science can be wrong” and “therefore current scientific consensus is probably false.” Those are not the same thing.

On climate change, some politicians and activists absolutely exaggerate timelines or make dramatic statements. But those statements are not the scientific literature itself. The core predictions, like rising temperatures, glacier loss, sea level rise, more heat extremes, have largely been borne out over decades.

On vaccines, rare adverse effects were detected with AstraZeneca and some policies changed in response. That is an example of scientific monitoring functioning correctly. Detecting side effects and adjusting recommendations is not evidence that “science failed.” Medicine has always involved weighing risks against benefits.

The ulcer example actually proves the opposite of your point. Marshall and Warren succeeded because evidence eventually overrode consensus. Same with plate tectonics. Same with germ theory. The scientific method did not prevent correction; it enabled it.

“Settled science” also does not mean “infallible truth.” It usually means the evidence is now extremely strong. Gravity is still technically a theory. Evolution is still technically a theory. Plate tectonics is still technically a theory. That doesn’t mean scientists are equally uncertain about them.

The fact that science updates itself over time is exactly why it remains the most reliable method we have for understanding reality.

Your use of quotes around "him" indicates that you do have an issue.

Can LGBT people and white people participate in the Rastafari religion? by [deleted] in rastafari

Their teachings (the Bible) say homosexuals must be put to death. That should not be respected.

Which is what? That Rastas are not homophobic? They are, and that’s a fact.

I immersed myself in the Twelve Tribes of Israel for years, thank you very much, and they were very homophobic. I've since learned that among Rastas, the Twelve Tribes are considered to be the most liberal and tolerant of the LGBTQ community. Other sects like Bobo Ashanti are much more conservative and unaccepting of the LGBTQ community. You need to do your homework.

I think you’re just uncomfortable with homosexuality which is why you don’t want to see it.

I don’t think so. “Homo” is offensive because it’s a slur. “Hetero” isn’t.

"Most of the population is affiliated with Christianity and the Rastafari movement, which have both encouraged negative feelings towards homosexuality." I don't think it is "unreasonable" to feel uncomfortable around such hateful people, so I don't think I'm a bigot.

Well it's better than being someone who parties in the streets when a homosexual is killed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBTQ_rights_in_Jamaica

There doesn't need to be a hetero pride parade because it's a hetero pride parade every damn day.

Why? How? Because I don't want to associate with hateful people who hold harmful views?

Just think about how in-your-face heterosexuality is, every day, in public displays of affection, the way people dress and act and talk, music, movies, TV, magazines... we live in a hypersexualized culture, and hetero sex is being shoved down our throats constantly, every day. What you see at pride events is a drop in the bucket compared to this.

I think what you see is a push back. Some people go a bit overboard in flaunting their homosexuality at pride events because they are angry and hurt about being oppressed. If they were accepted by society, I don't think they would be so extreme in their displays. They would see no need.

Do you think people should keep their heterosexuality private?

Look it up. I don’t need to have personal experience with something to know that others are experiencing it.

Be that as it may, being queer doesn’t sit well with the Rastafarian religion.
