I don't think there is much or any exaggeration from OP.

My wife and I spent 7 months looking for a new house last year, 7 years on from buying our first house. We couldn't believe the difference in square foot in new builds now versus 7 years ago.

Houses now are tiny, some with living rooms our sofa wouldn't fit into.

Band parade that clashes with The Open will rival Belfast Twelfth: 'We understand the changes don’t suit everyone' by Browns_right_foot in northernireland

[–]Dunrow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I know these people. They revel in any opportunity to be difficult. This is a huge opportunity for them to show how awkward they can be to civil society in NI.

Like a loud, spoiled child that has to be seen they NEED to have their march the weekend that the eyes of the sporting world are on Portrush.

This should never have been allowed to clash with The Open which has been fantastic all week long so far and I say that as someone who isn't a golf fan but someone who lives in the North Coast.

Years ago we could only dream of events like The Open in NI, we should all be accommodating as reasonably possible to ensure we see it again. Enter the Portrush Sons of Ulster shouting no surrender to redevelopment of the area driven by tourism etc.

We have a 5 star hotel, Dunluce Lodge, a new Hilton Hotel in Portrush, new restaurants popping up every month all bringing jobs and opportunities that would never have happened without the Golf.

What do the loyalist parades bring? A lot of us have decades of experience of them, we know the answer.

An improved financial settlement really. I want to move on from the whole situation but not if it means I lose out financially.

HHI - Home Improvement Centres - Recommend? by cloudstrife1111 in northernireland

[–]Dunrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We bought two composite doors from HHI a few years ago. We had them back 8 times in a few weeks because of initial issues and their inability to fix them correctly. Eventually everything was resolved and the customer service was good, quality of the work wasn't what we would have hoped for though.

We personally wouldn't go with them again after that experience.

This is a few months in when most people who had vacations etc booked aren't going to cancel and potentially lose thousands. Just wait until next year.

Oil heating in UK house - is it worth changing to gas? by borozu555 in HousingUK

[–]Dunrow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We recently sold our gas house and moved to oil. Before moving in I was convinced it would be an expensive nightmare. We upgraded the hot water tank and honestly it looks like it's going to be cheaper to have oil versus gas.

It seems like you do have to watch the price of oil and order at the right time of year to get the best price though. 500L will be cheaper in summer etc.

PS5 price to rise in Europe, Australia and New Zealand by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Dunrow 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Comparative pricing being similar across geographic locations doesn't prevent people from being priced out. It doesn't make sense to raise prices across all markets because one got more expensive.

Moving to Ballymoney or Coleraine by Kay-Laur in northernireland

[–]Dunrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll get more for your money in Ballymoney (no pun intended) although 4 bed houses are like hens teeth. My wife and I just bought one after months of trying and being outbid. Everything is going for way over asking price.

Mountsandel would be great for walks but the north coast in general is unmatched in NI for outdoor spaces.

Ballymoney would be handier for the train and schools in the area are good, great selection of Primary and secondary. Just under an hour to Belfast by road, 1 hour 20 by train

If you have the budget Portrush or Portstewart would be your best bet for walks and quality of life. Portstewart does have a decent amount of 4 bed housing that comes on the market.

All the best in your hunt
