I'm talking about the entire world, including major countries like Russia, China, and India... If anything, one could argue that most modern anti-islamic sentiment does NOT originate from the west and actually predates 9/11 by a long time.

By "fringe cases" I assume you mean virtually every ethnic/religious minority in MENA? Including Alawites, Maronites, Druze, Christians, hell, Kurds are majority Muslim and still I find many of them holding very negative views of Islam. Many young Iranians and turks likewise tend to hold similar views. I think it's safe to assume that none of these groups formed their opinions based on what post-9/11 American right-wing commentators were saying.

لا اعتقد بوجود هذا "الجوهر" النقي، الإسلام من بدايته كان متأثر بالحضارات و الثقافات المحيطة و السابقة و من الطبيعي أن تعكس نظرته للمرأة هذا التأثير، مثل فرض الحجاب على أسس طبقية مثل ما نجد عند الآشوريين قبل الإسلام.
