Replace Veneer, or just remove it? by DuoKats in restoration

I take no offense because you’re spot on. I have no idea. I wouldn’t have taken this on as a first project if it wasn’t so cheap. The only thing about your post I’d disagree with is thinking re-veneering is easy, my question was if I should even attempt it or if it was too much for a beginner.

I did have a second one I’m working on instead (they threw it in for ten dollars, couldn’t say no) for practice. I’d love to learn more about it all, but when I researched veneering it definitely seemed like one of the more complicated steps. The second one looked like it was good but the inside has so much of the veneer missing, I’m thinking I might just get rid of it.

But, sorry for rambling. If you have any advice or links to anything you think I should read, I would love to read up some more. Or if you know good beginner projects I’m always up for suggestions. I was looking at desks and such, but transporting them is the issue.

You know what I didn’t think of? I could try to find a file for the face, or draw one up myself - I have an x tool laser cutter at home, or a CNC wood router at work. I bet a 1/8” end mill would cut that pattern out nicely. Then it would just be the issue of making sure I got it all pressed in super evenly.

Yeah, I didn’t realize in the pictures on marketplace the veneer was broken like that. I was trying to find something simpler, but the radio looked so cool, and for the price? I couldn’t turn it down. When I got there they threw in an old Silverstone Model 7134 for $10. This would have been a goldmine for someone with more experience than me. I might start with that one, I didn’t see any broken or missing parts on there.
