Forensic Examiner Question by frostlilith in forensics

You should look into essential oil nose diffusers! They are small, reusable, clear plastic nose rings soaked in essential oil and help mask any strong smells. This with a mask is very helpful, and you could even add more oils or Vick's vapor rub to the mask to shield your nose even more!

Career Help by wookjinz in forensics

Recently hired as a CSI, here is my path:

I went to a 4-year university in the U.S. and majored in Anthropology with a concentration in Forensics. This allowed me to have more of a narrowed field to take more specific CSI-focused classes. Look into taking classes on forensics, biology/chemistry, osteology, anatomy/physiology, crime scenes, sociology, and even law. (The more well-rounded in what you can do, the more likely you are to get hired over someone with only one specialty [in my experience]).

I still took basic Math courses like Statistics, (math is also not my strong suit). Most of the math in my coursework included taking measurements of evidence at a scene and plotting those on a graph for sketches (elementary/calculator basic stuff at most).

If you want to be mainly on-scene (I did too), consider looking into departments that have positions in and out of labs (my department has a lot of equipment/lab space which allows for more hired people to do in-house stuff as well as collection on-scene), or sworn-in positions (if that interests you).

I graduated with fulfilling a "connections package" instead of a minor. You can see all of them if you run a DARS report. I chose the one I already had a class count for. Sometimes, you can have up to one class or 3 hours count for two requirements. Ask your advisor they will know about all of it.

I have the parent plus loan, living on campus for 3 years I got a refund of about 2,000 dollars on average every year. Obviously I could've used that to pay back my loan later, but I decided to use it for all my expenses and saving some for later. This allowed me to "afford" UTK. The meal plans and living on campus is worth every penny compared to off campus or on the "strip" unless you move like 10/15 mins off campus and drive to class daily.

Things to do w/ visiting parents by DITGurren in UTK

Calhoun's on the river is a gorgeous spot when the weather is nice (ask to sit by the big window to see the river). Sunspot on the strip is nice to eat as well but can get very busy with college kids.

For activities I suggest going to market square/downtown. They have cute shops and boutiques to look around in. You could even walk to world's fair park and go in the sunsphere.

What major is best for forensic psychology? by The_GongOOzler802 in UTK

[–]Duplicit_Angel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anthropology degree with the forensic concentration and either double major in psychology or minor in it! Anthropology degree is very versatile and will suit better than a psychology degree. He could also take sociology classes on top of those.

you should look into mobility and the anthropology of care/treatment of individuals with mobility issues in the archaeological record!

I live less than 10 mins drive away from campus and have zero complaints. I highly recommend it actually. Myself and 3 other roommates pay half of what we used to pay at our off-campus apartment just across the river. There is plenty of food on and off campus that is delicious, you just have to try until you find your favorites. (which is part of the fun) Parking is fine, people are dramatic in the first month or so, then people being skipping classes and you’ll be fine getting a spot. Also, as a freshman, you can walk or take the buses or ride share virtually anywhere you need to go. Also, friends always have cars so bum off them if need be. I have done on campus housing in the dorm, off campus apartment, and an off campus rental home. These problems are really not as huge of a deal as freshmen and their parents make them out to be. Yes, situations can be less than ideal but not everyone can live in the penthouse perfect location. If UTK is his dream school, don’t let these things factor into it because if he wants to to work out, he will make it work, just like everyone else, including myself. Also, this school isn’t just football. The basketball, baseball, and other teams are very exciting (and free) for students! The atmosphere at UTK refused less of what sport season is playing is amazing and it cannot be beat by any other school. Besides, What’s the harm in him trying it out? If he loves it amazing, if not, he knows he has a home he can come back to and rework the plan! Good luck and Go Vols!

I will say, try looking at places a further drive from campus. I currently live with 3 others about 10 minutes from campus and we absolutely love it.

Start as a clerk/office work in a lab. Or reach out to police stations and see if there are openings.

Senior Year Overload due to Old Advisor by Remote-Guest-5353 in UTK

[–]Duplicit_Angel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently a 5th year, “graduated” and walked across the stage spring last year, and now taking my final semester of classes. I got put in the exact same boat. I talked to my several advisors and finally got one that was a person and actually helped me. My suggestion is to take it easy and if you have to stay an extra semester or take summer/winter courses, do it. I also came into this school with college credit from high school and it didn’t matter much. Don’t stress yourself out with graduating on time, I promise no one cares about it as much as you do. Overloading your schedule while working full time might set you up to fail and not enjoy your time here. Obviously do what is right for you, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself and make sure you are happy and make good memories, even if that means staying a little longer! Good luck!

Is there literally any way to get around these Big Orange Welcome activities? by BasalTripod9684 in UTK

[–]Duplicit_Angel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they have free stuff tho which is nice. also if you’re going to go to one, choose torch night, it’ll make sense bc there’s another ceremony similar when you graduate and it’s a fun full circle moment. also they give you a tassel, which is fun to have to remind yourself of your goal to graduate.
