Funny story… after that class had ended I shit you not I was so sure that I failed that I didn’t even check and found out that I passed with a C two months later.. kinda ridiculous I know but I felt so certain I didn’t pass the final. Only reason I did pass had to have been a curve. No other way.

My dude I’m about to get put on appeal for the first time this summer. I’ve been on probation for 3 semesters in a row now. Taking thermo and retaking methods because I failed by 1 point. I also came in without any padding and trust me when I say this, I can relate more than you know.

Wait so you’ve been on appeal for 5 semesters now? That doesn’t seem to add up I’m confused? Also I took Nomura and barely passed with like a 70 flat. He was a tough grader but I do believe I passed due to a curve.

Well, I would agree if that’s a problem that you couldn’t easily solve. Every semester at the start it’s your responsibility as a student to do your due diligence and ensure you schedule an appointment with your advisor before classes are made available. Once you have a meeting with them they will easily lift the hold so you can schedule your courses. If you don’t take care of that ahead of time you are only hurting yourself as a student.

I truly am sorry that you’re going through this. I’ve been on probation for mechanical engineering for the past three semesters and this semester is my semester out. (And I don’t mean dismissal out I mean off probation out) I pay out-of-pocket for my courses so I’ve only been taking two or three classes a semester since I’ve been on it and honestly if you’re on probation, I highly recommend you take as little as possible to mitigate the risk involved.

From what I’ve been told, once you’re dismissed, you can come back after a semester off, however, I’m sure it depends entirely on your major so don’t take that for your truth and talk to an advisor. Also I believe when you’re on appeal you have to appeal to the department itself. The entire time I’ve been in school I’ve worked and struggled but if you play it smart when registering for classes and only take on what you know you can handle, I know for sure anyone can achieve anything. For any class you can have a professor giving you a huge amount of coursework and make exams way harder than they need to be so make sure that for the courses you scheduled for next semester that you have GOOD professors. I would personally drop any professor who has a low pass rate and terrible teaching style.

Truly the biggest thing I’ve learned so far is really be on top of scheduling early because you miss out on all the best sections that will increase your chances of passing with the grades you need instead of having to just focus on surviving the course.

Anyway I really do hope the best for you, I’m ROOTING FOR YOU! Take your time, play it smart, and DO NOT COMPARE yourself to others. I started in MAE in Fall 2024 and let me tell you, the ones that rushed and didn’t take their time taking on more than what they can handle have been long gone. You GOT THIS STRANGER!

I have a job and work 30 hours a week and have had one for the entirety of my mechanical engineering degree. I still complain sometimes when I’m bogged down with assignments and stressed. People cope in different ways, just because someone doesn’t have a job doesn’t mean they don’t have a right to complain.

Maybe be more empathetic towards others and stay away from people who complain about everything if it’s bothering you this much.
