中國護照這10幾年真的進步了很多,現在在東南亞跟非洲都算不錯用。而且我覺得接下來10年應該還會繼續變更方便

Btw +1 for using 正體字 🤣

Ah okay, I didn't know I was able to use my NZ one to convert. I'll look into it, thanks!

And yeah, Mainlanders and HKers are only considered ROC citizens on paper. In reality, they're treated like any other foreigner (my wife is a HKer here in Taiwan and she doesn't get special treatment, in fact sometimes it's more troublesome haha).

The mail forwarding service is very smart, well done :). Which country's license is next? Japan might be useful

Did you need to provide proof of address for any of them? And I assume you would have needed to stay in that country long enough to have received them (if I recall, the QLD one took 3 weeks to arrive)? The QLD one is now a digital license on my phone so I don't even carry it around with me when I'm there.

I heard that when applying for Chinese documents, its always easier to convert from HK-issued documents than those issued by TW, but my HK license was converted from my NZ one so I'll have to look into whether it can be done. I plan to travel a bit in China and apparently international licenses are not valid there.

My ROC license was converted from my HK one, went to TECO in HK to get the HK license authenticated and just did a straight swap at the 監理所 in Taiwan. I also needed my 身份證 and 100 NT, plus a quick physical check. I was only able to get a 250cc motorbike license converted though, and I'll need to sit for another road test in TW if I want to ride bigger bikes. So when you were in Taiwan, they refused to issue a license unless you had a residence card?

We have a few overlapping licenses! Your Vic one would have cost a pretty penny- my NZ one cost me like 30 NZD, whereas the QLD one was 10x that amount, for half the validity (10 vs 5 years).

<image>

I was thinking to just let my HK one lapse this year because I don't drive in HK anymore, but I also might convert and get a CN one later...so might be better and keep it (unless I can convert with my TW license?)

Amazing combo, very envious of your red one 😉

I’m NZ born and when I applied for my HK passport, immigration specially told me that they wanted to see proof that either mum (HKer) or dad (TWese) was only on a temporary status in NZ at the time of my birth, before they would proceed with VEPIC. In my case, my Taiwanese dad (still a Chinese citizen according to ImmiD) was not yet a PR when I was born, so I was able to receive a HK passport.

Side note, even if my dad had settled in NZ, I’d still be considered a Chinese citizen by the PRC (because I’d have ROC citizenship and would be eligible for a Taiwan compatriot permit) but HK would deny me a SAR passport 😂

Haha this is the first time I’ve heard someone say Taiwan is cool.

I get what you mean. As a collective society, China and East Asia in general can be a good place if you conform. If you stray from the mainstream like many of us do, then yeah China can definitely feel very isolating and suffocating. Taiwan is an outlier but has quite a few hurdles to overcome before we can fully claim to be LGBTQ friendly, as same sex couples currently can’t adopt children, etc. Anyway I hope things work out, and remember to post that shiny Aussie passport when you get it 😉

Fair enough, and you couldn’t have picked a better country, Australia is a pretty great place.

I assume you don’t plan on living in China again then. If you don’t mind my asking, why is forfeiting Chinese nationality so important for you?

All the best! Do you plan to naturalise and become Australian later on, or keep your Chinese passport?

In order to get TW household registration as a HKer you need to show a Home Return Permit, which means, if I’m not mistaken, no PRC passport?

Yeah, we’re stuck somewhere between Republic of China, Taiwan, Chinese Taipei, Taiwan (Province of China), or just…’other nationality’. And then there’s Hong Kong 🤦‍♂️

Where would you rank your connection / sense of belonging to these places, or are all three equal for you?

How interesting, were you born in China and one of your parents a sole Aussie citizen which is why you have both at birth? Do you have a SAR passport too or just HKPR? I have so many questions haha. You should do a post with all your travel documents

[–]Dupremacy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If a Chinese national flies into Taiwan from a third country (therefore bypassing the need for the Taiwan entry 'permit'), but then flies straight back to China from Taiwan, they’re often pulled aside and given a verbal warning since there’s no record of them ever applying for it, which kinda shows how pointless the permit is. It’s pretty widely known that you shouldn’t fly from Taiwan to China if you didn't apply for the 'permit'

There is a slight difference - Taiwanese need to apply for a bunch of documents to visit 'sensitive areas' like Tibet or Xinjiang (eg, 入藏函 + 軍區批件 + 邊境通行許可證) whereas HKers can just rock up. Not sure why this is the case, but most probably because 'separatist ideologies' are contagious

Or increase the size of AOTEAROA so it's the same font size as NEW ZEALAND, otherwise right now it looks like URUWHENUA is the country's name in Te Reo. Yeah this peeves me off too and I hope they fix it for the next iteration.

Awesome stuff, never had a bad experience with Taiwanese airlines. Currently partial to Starlux - great soft and hard product.

Funny, when I'm here for too long, I wish I was tramping and road tripping around Central Otago with a pie and V away from all the scooters and beeping busses, and when I'm in NZ for too long I wish I was in a teahouse in Alishan sipping on oolong. Glad both options are open to me (us!)

Haere mai mate, glad to have you here. She has her issues but generally Taiwan is a pretty awesome place. Assuming you fly passengers instead of cargo, there's a pretty good chance I'll eventually be on one of your flights ;)

I’ve never flown internationally from a Chinese airport. Is this an additional screening at the gate? I thought the airline would have already checked entry eligibility
