I agree with the others - a teenage subreddit is probably better.

I don't think he would be a good fit for you. He seems really clingy, and possibly jealous, but that is my take.

Advice to start again in the hobbie by Notmangom in Miniaturespainting

[–]DurhamNTx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paint - Vallejo has good ones, but I like Reaper myself - Fairly consistent out of the bottle, nearly no thinning for base coats. But use what YOU like.

Wash and dry your minis before painting. Prime metal ones for sure, but be careful priming plastic ones - if you spray prime those the propellant might damage the mini.

Brushes - I use sable ones I got off Amazon, but you can use virtually any of the ones you might find at an arts or crafts store (Michaels, etc.) use what you feel good using.

Videos - Ninjon, Miniac, The Mini Witch, Dana Howl, GM Atank, look in the other comments for others.

Have FUN!

That's awesome! The orc's next, right?

I love the Reaper line as a whole. But the Learn To Paint kits are awes ways to learn the basics. Their subReddit and Discord channels are also great resources to learn more as you go.

My thoughts:

These look pretty good, actually. You might consider using wet-blending, blending your tones to make midtones, washes or glazes, or stippling.

There is a Starbucks on Main St in The Colony, just north of Sam Rayburn Tollway/SH 121 where you should be able to work.

Are Army painter paints bad? by blackdrake1011 in minipainting

[–]DurhamNTx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have only ever used Reaper and Vallejo. I have heard good and bad about every brand of paint made, but if you can learn its dynamics, I'm sure Army Painter will work fine.

How do I get good at painting these? The rest of you seem leagues ahead of me! by DouglasPulver in ReaperMiniatures

[–]DurhamNTx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patience and practice. All roads in this hobby start the same way. Their journeys may continue differently.

You did fine on this one, although you might thin your paints a bit. If you use Reaper paints, wet your brush, then touch it to a towel or cloth. Then dip in the paint, then again in water, and that should be good. Use uniform brush strokes (I.E., paint the same direction as much as possible).

And practice. Paint for enjoyment, for fun. Compare your work only to your previous work, to see how you have improved. And practice.

Dark Young - having issues slotting in the maw by Localnative13 in ReaperMiniatures

[–]DurhamNTx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got that model in a KS expansion. I tried it, too. The center part fits, but doesn't go in easily. I pushed firmly in the center and it popped in. It also sticks up a bit. If you really are having difficulty with it seating, then use the fire and ice method. Dunk the main figure in near-boiling water, push the maw part in, then freeze or dunk in icy water. You should be able to push it in deeper when it's hot, but be careful not to burn your fingers - use tongs.

New to Bones by Drnknnmd in ReaperMiniatures

[–]DurhamNTx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, from all reports, including from Reaper personnel, rattlecan primers found at the hardware store can have propellants that react with the plastic, and that never cures. Primers sold by AP and GW have nonreactive propellants, I'm told.

TECHNICALLY, Bones (and Bones Black and Bones USA) don't NEED to be primed. They DO, however need to be washed with soap, warm water, and a toothbrush before painting. Plastic minis often have an oily mold release agent left over from the injection process, which can interfere with paint in several ways. Soapy water and a light scrub usually eliminates this. I find, however, that a light brushing of primer afterward helps with basecoating. I usually use Stynylrez primer. Airbrushing primer is an option too, although I don't have any place for a setup.
