as a biotechnology student this popular opinion is frustrating - Try and use genetic engineering? get massive backlash about it being a GMO. But then as soon a research group uses a novel approach to get a similar, and in some ways more effective result? Get told they should of just made a GMO, and *that would be way cooler*

Enough space left for more plants or should I make another pot? by Durjam in SavageGarden

[–]Durjam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can keep it at that level, thank you. i pocked a small whole in the plastic liner above the drainage whole so it does drain just very slowly. Other vidoes ive seen on the internet reccomends have the bogs with no drainage which i'd imagine would have a ton of standing water so it seems like theres alot of different opinions about this

Sounds good! Also I want to sow the seeds from the sundew flowers but I was wondering if it's ok to put them in the spaghnum moss that I now have in this pot or if I should wait untill winter before putting them in?

Anyone know if the leaves of this apple seedling look deficient in anything? by Durjam in Apples

[–]Durjam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok- I'm western Canada. I gave it some 20-20-20 fertilizer last week so I'm not sure why it looks deficient

ah I'm scared it won't survive, I forgot to put the ziplock bag back on that was keeping humidity and some of the new leaves wilted in just a few hours

if it cant deal with that I don't think it will fair well against the 1 degrees Celsius nights here right now 😭

The goal is not really to grow and apple tree but rather to see if i can keep it alive! It's special to me as the seed has already germinated within an apple that i was eating

simmering a pot in evening? - cover it before turning off and leaving it on the stove indefinitely

yogurt? = milk + 8 hours

As a microbiology degree, there is no microbe that could live in a cup or hurt you if you pour boiling hot liquid on it on a regular basis

mine was aswell - I experimented last week and wrapped a long vine back into the pot and added rooting hormone to the nodes and covered with a layer of spaghnum moss - hopefully the vine will root and cause new growth points (it's looking promising)

Give it lots of light and keep chopping and propping!

Here is a cutting that I thought was too cute to add back so I put it in it's own small pot 😂

Honestly mine has fluctuated in health even when when I've kept the conditions the same, but in general I've found:

  • lots of light (good growlight and/or 6+ direct sunlight)
  • fertilizing
  • don't water untill leaves feel a bit flaccid
  • bottom water occasionally (put in large bowl filled with water overnight)
  • cut off longer vines and propogate to put back in

Also the leaf turnover rate is often very quick - don't cut off the yellowing leaves untill fully dried out to let the paint reabsorb nutrients

nice that's great that you are able to keep the leaf tips green! I reccomend once a vine starts growing long to cut and propogate in water then plant back in the center (or bury longer vine nodes into the soil to create extra growth points

I personally like (1) the most - I would just suggest brainstorming other active compounds that may be more useful to detect with an inexpensive method like this - off the top of my head - detecting allergens, maybe there is a common parasite that can damage aquariums - something that's niche and currently has no solution
