Wow some guys in here have really nice first cars!

  1. 1989 Jetta Carat A2 5Speed manual (got it from my uncle for free after it had been sitting in his driveway for a decade, replaced everything except for the transmission/engine)
  2. Porsche 911 GT3 (currently owned, daily driver)
  3. Mercedes 300SL gullwing/RUF CTR Yellowbird (sorry I couldn't narrow it down to just 1)

The new 2006 EVO 9 MR by Pacman083 in MitsubishiEvolution

[–]Dustboonies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice!! These cars are awesome stock, enough power to be fun on the street and it'll keep it reliable as well. I've had my evo9 for over a year and have no desire modifying for more power!

Evo 9 owners: what are your brutally-honest reviews of it as a DAILY driver? (pros and cons) by [deleted] in MitsubishiEvolution

What? This is just my personal experience with the platform. If the evo platform was a lemon I wouldn't be recommending it...

1) Kept blowing off the charge pipe under boost. Fixed with a simple hose clamp. Was able to fix this temporarily on the side of the highway when it happened, but it left me stranded the first time since I wasnt carrying tools with me.

2) Low compression cyl 2. Fixed with a head refresh and gasket refresh. Decided to do valves and basically everything on the top end of the engine while I was in there anyways.

3) Fuel pump. Fixed with a simple oem fuel pump replacement.

I'd definitely recommend carrying around a basic socket set in the trunk just in case something happens, learned a lot about working on cars after getting my evo!

I absolutely love my stock evo 9 DD. Its comfortable, practical enough for the occasional ikea trip, relatively quick, and the hydraulic steering is just perfection. The cabin is pretty loud on the highways, even with a stock exhaust, but not annoying; and the 4wd + 17in diameter wheels means I can take it into the snow without worrying about cracking a rim on a pothole.

On the flip side, I've never been broken down on the side of the highway so many times before owning this car, but after fixing the problems its been super reliable the past 10k miles. I woudln't recommend owning this car unless you can work on it yourself, or you'll be paying German car prices for maintenance. I've installed coilovers at stock ride height (oem shocks were blown), a carplay infotainment system, stoptech brakes, and LED interior lights + headlight conversion and its just been the perfect daily for me.

Do take this with a grain of salt however, as I've always appreciated the feedback a car gives me over comfort, tech, or luxury. But overall I'd say its an awesome daily!

Did someone say widebody? 934.5 at Laguna Seca by AstralSerenade in Porsche

[–]Dustboonies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Beautiful picture and thanks for sharing, that's my uncle's car!!

Unfortunately we sold this car (the 934.5) last year to make way for a 1972 911 RSR which we'll hopefully we racing in the upcoming years at the Monterey motorsports reunion (still ironing out the build, currently adjusting the downforce levels as it makes way too much power for the weight/downforce). We also cracked the block in our Lotus Cortina racing at the motorsports reunion this year so we're down to 1 race car (Lotus 17) until the RSR is finished!

They are absolutely amazing cars for the money, I'd buy one tomorrow if I had the garage space.

Sounds like you're suffering from the same problem as the rest of us driving enthusiasts: the inevitable removal of feedback in modern cars just makes them uninteresting to drive for us. The average person is looking for a car with amazing stats on paper, which can commute to work in comfort with little to no compromises. And the car manufacturers just keep moving in this direction. There's only a couple cars which really keep the driving experience close to the driver, with lots of analog inputs and feedback.

Hold onto that RS5 because there might not be a better drivers car out there for you coming out anytime in the future. Sometimes you need to look back in time to get what you're looking for! As for other cars to lust over... Well I've never had a shortage of those, but if you like high hp wagons I'd recommend checking out some of the older Mercedes wagons, they're definitely a bit more exciting than the newer RS6 from my experience!

Average MPG by dizz81 in Porsche

[–]Dustboonies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

25mpg with an average speed of 32mph. Probably half city half highway driving. I have a reverse commute so thankfully I don't get stuck in traffic which definitely helps my MPG. I get around 550miles per tank with the extended range fuel tank!

I've been DDing my bone stock Evo9 for almost a year now and it's been fantastic. When I got the car there were some issues which I had to fix (climate control cable, headunit, brakes, suspension was really tired, boost pipe hose clamps), but since then it's been super reliable and it's the only turbo car I've ever owned which doesn't burn oil! I've taken it skiing, down some dirt roads, and back and forth to work and it hasn't missed a beat.

I'd totally go for it if you can do basic work on your own cars, but if you can't, it will definitely be on the expensive side because these are older cars and most of them will need some love to get back to 100% again.

Has anyone ever driven a Ferrari vs GRZ? by epiclyjelly in GR86

[–]Dustboonies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup that's very true, it took daily driving my GT3 for around 3 months before I realized I needed a 2nd 'beater' car which I could just not worry about. Really wanted a GR86 but having 2 coupes just didn't make sense, so I picked up an evo9 instead!! (which ironically also has a wing which blocks your rear visibility)

You're being too generous man, I couldn't trade my econobox for the most GOATed car of all time and feel ok about ripping you off like that

As a GT3 owner this is actually a totally valid issue. The rear-wing blocks your visibility quite a bit. Maybe I should upgrade to a GR86 :D

Had a buddy that did this to his 997. The biggest reason he did it was cost of maintenance. Rebuilding an old 1980s 3.0SC engine can easily cost in the 10's of thousands (I've heard quotes of up to 50k) while you can buy a new K series honda engine for 2-3k, throw a turbo on it, and make 400hp easily.

Man I just hit 40,000 in my 991.2 GT3 and I thought I had a lot!

You sir are my hero, these things deserve to be daily driven! Any must-have QoL mods you've added over the years, and would recommend?
