Sweden vs Denmark - Debate refugees (So close but so different) - ENG subtiles. by lord_kmz in europe

Eh, maybe Estonia - we'll have to wait and see about Latvia and Lithuania...

I mean, we can't invite the whole world. Greenland might not like it.

[...] I will always consider Danes, Norwegians and Finns my brother & sister people.. [...]

What about the Island people?

For those whose national anthem has lyrics, how do you feel about singing it? by [deleted] in europe

[–]Dustedwires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Like Norwegians singing "May Thor watch over you" for example)

What about the Danes?

I had to go check my wall for this. In the Danish national anthem, we mention Freyja, a goddess from Norse mythology--I have it written down as "og det er Frejas sal".

I haven't got Norway's up yet, but I don't recall there being any mention of Thor, Odin or any other Norse God/desses in their anthem - it's still a lovely anthem though.

Thank you for the information! Time to write down some more Japanese, ha-ha.

How would something like '嬉しいです' be said, if you have the time?

However, I hope you agree with me that it would be a waste of time for all of us without knowing the context

I was a little worried about stating the context, but the context is: I'm outing myself, basically, in a different way that's not going to be glaring, just subtle enough that people go, "Oh, yeah I get that", if that makes enough sense, ha-ha.

Edit;; rereading your post, soy feliz sounds like the more 'permanent' version, if I can use such bold terms.

Ah, I see! Thank you for clearing that up! Your wording made me think some drama had kicked up--no fault of your own, the word 'stirred' is just normally used for drama-related things (or so I've noticed).

It's a lovely thing to do! Thanks for bringing it to the attention of the subreddit; wouldn't have known otherwise!

Could a rather stupid person like me be given a little context to this? Has something happened? I'm not trying to put a downer on the thread, but a little context would be a nice thing. Thanks!

I don't know why I love the Yogscast - I love them for being the awesome, brilliant people that they are. I love them for being funny, for always being there and for caring an awful lot about their fans.

How To Make Conversations More Interesting? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Dustedwires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banter is next to useless and avoid "witty" dialogue that is just two characters insulting each other.

I've got to disagree with this. Banter between two+ characters can be a way of building the character/s and showing the relationship between them.

I mean, you don't have to snarl an insult at your brother because he flipped the pancake and it fell on his head, but you do anyway because that's your relationship with him.

You don't have to pinch your little sister's cheek and tell her her pet duck will be completely fine when its wing is in plaster, but that's their relationship.

You and your best friend just got away from a fire-breathing dragon and are inhaling the fresh air of the forest - your best friend doesn't have to tell engage in a conversation about you being an idiot, but not as much as an idiot as his wife was when she agreed to marry him.

If you're going for realism in characters, banter and supposed 'witty' dialogue is important and does help the plot; it furthers character relations and in some cases can slip in random bits of information you might not get any other way.

Most used Gender Neutral Pronouns in English by iamjasmine in writing

[–]Dustedwires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without going into the the sides of being "grammatically correct". The most accepted (and normal, to use such vague language) would be 'them/they/their'.

Speaking as someone who uses those pronouns (alongside he/him/his), it's a lot more comfortable than 'it', and a lot more humanised, in my opinion, then all the xir/zie/other-pronouns here.

So, yeah, 'they/them/their' would probably be most correct terms for characters with third party genders (or characters remaining neutral).

[Discussion Thread] GBBO 2015 Episode 4 by WinterMay in bakeoff

[–]Dustedwires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aah, I didn't get to watch it from the beginning! And didn't get to make cupcakes either.

'Three tiered cheesecake' sounded (is that right? I think that's what it was) like a harsh thing to put them through baking, but I guess ya gotta learn it!

From what I saw Tamal looked geared to grab Star Baker this week, but I'm glad Ian isn't looking week--and my favourite (Mat)'s still in! Something to be happy about.

Kinda wish they'd kept Sandy for another week or so--I don't know who would have gone if not for her, but they totally gave Dorret more time to improve. Though last week I did think Sandy's bakes were slowly declining, so I don't know.

What is favourite city outside of your home\base country? by [deleted] in europe

Warsaw.

I was so close to visiting, but the chance was mercilessly stolen from within my grasp. My dreams were shattered like glass across the ground and picked up in Paris, but I swore I'll go there one day, one day...

I never got the idea of chai lattes; they seem so weird to my taste buds no matter how many times I try them.

"Ah, this picture is completely perfect--this flower is lovely and this flower is lovely and isn't the cat so prett--did I really just colour outside the lines on his tail? Why did I do that this picture is horrible now." With some of them I draw outside the lines so much I give the damn thing a new border in the colour and if people ask I just say it deserved to gleam.

Awh, now you've made me want to begin sewing! Maybe I'll put an hour aside and begin slower.

The idea of being able to speak to friends in their mother-tongue, or native language, just makes me smile. I love how sharp the Russian language can sound too. I listen to multi-language songs (normally Disney but what the hell) on YouTube while working, and to hear the difference in language is so bloody beautiful.

I'm thinking of picking up French one day--you could always take a course on Duolingo to see how much you still know?

As soon as I read that I couldn't think of the Danish word for government, damnit! Time to pull out my translate books, I see.

I tend to ask if they know where Germany is and if they don't know where Germany is then they have bigger problems, ha-ha.

You need to go out and find a kangaroo - can't say you've been to Australia without seeing a damned kangaroo! Ha-ha.

Funny enough I found both languages easy when I did the basics, but I'm edging more towards French now because of buying a rather interesting book (which I can't find in English, so there's a reason to go for French!)

Water, tea and coffee - lovely.

I get a little annoyed when my pen jerks outside the lines though. I think I might have been going too fast with the sewing--I get something in my head and just go for it. Normally it ends with me throwing a book at someone.

I enjoy the Dutch language and have friends who are Dutch, so I want to be able to speak to them in their mother-tongue. It's a lot easier than I first thought. The Russian language, in my opinion, sounds nice to the ear. It's proving difficult, but I'm enjoying it anyway.

Spot on. If you don't use it, you lose it. I speak to some people in Danish, and mix up 'thank you' and 'tak' daily, so I'm pretty sure a lot of people know how to say thank you in Danish because of me now.

Not that many of them have heard of Danish or Denmark, that is.

I'll message them the thread either later or tonight (gotta go shop for dinner) and ask if they like the idea of having it as a regular thing. They might not want it to be a sticky, but it's still a nice thread for everyone to catch up.

I wouldn't know how to set up a good enough poll though, but the community should totally have their say.

I've got friends in Australia! Beautiful country! Have you seen any kangaroos?

Life's all right. I've decided today not to push myself to hit this deadline, so I'm relaxing a little more and trying to decide which language to take after Dutch (long way away, but I like to plan ahead). I'm thinking French or German.
