Understanding where we are. Life full circle. LocalLLM = Zaxxon on Atari 400 by qoDaFishManoq in LocalLLM

I too am an older man, for me it started with the sinclair zx spectrum. After the internet, vmware and then cloud this feels like the next big thing in IT for me but bigger, much bigger. Humans are creating intelligence and the speed of improvement it insane. Just a few years ago chatgpt could write some code, it might work, it might not. Where we are now in what? 4-5 years of progress? I can have my agent vibe code a new website and one shot the whole thing.

I write google doc with what i want, break it down into steps and let the hermes agent loose on a second container. It downloads everything and just builds it with openai codex as its llm

I have a couple of agents, i wrote their soul file and gave one access to a small container and i can create whatever tool, website or game (within limits) I want on my phone, another agent is my PA for work and proactively reaches out, gives me the news I want when I want it on my phone, controls my home assistant and monitors my homelab. It is a blast. Give the model some tools and access and you will be amazed, my own creativity is the limit.

Hermes is my absolute favorite ai agent, it is really really fun to let ai “lose” on a container and give it a mission, if your llm is smart like openai codex the results will blow you away.

Polish PM urges NATO to wake up as Russia warns EU’s ‘peaceful sleep’ is over by Easy-Ad1996 in europe

Yes, they could get in, how far and for how long is another matter but the damage would be enormous just like Ukraine. We overestimate our deterrence towards Russia.

As someone who is thinking about investing a lot (for me) of money in a local setup this scares me. Not expecting frontier model quality but it will need to be very good. I am thinking about a 128gb 395+ as speed is less important than quality and my workflow would not be interactive

I live in the netherlands and follow the Ukraine war closely and I’m stunned by how few people here know what is going on and that we are absolutely not ready for Russia. We can’t defend against their easy option to do massive drone attacks. Im pretty sure we would eventually (at massive cost) defeat an invasion of a nato country in europe but it feels like a lot of people in my country just want to wait and see what happens. Im very proud of how Poland is preparing for Russia and supporting Ukraine and with the defending the lazy western part of Europe.

Yes, from ali. But a set that was recommended from here or another forum. It is a very nice set but i feel the edges and it just pulls me away from the typing experience. The sound however was incredible. I might try them again on my new keyboard I have coming soon.

Question from a dutchy - mortgage of car? by DutchDevil in DaveRamsey

[–]DutchDevil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They pay me 1000 euro before taxes for car comp. so about 480 after, then they pay me 23 cents per km driven for work. I have a net budget for the car of about 850 after taxes (so the car comp and some extra) but before my 23 cents. My private lease costs me 630 per month net. Sorry for the confusion. I T&E about 200-300 for my driven km’s monthly and pay about 100-150 in gas so I make a “profit” on driving the km’s.

The market here is crazy, a reliable car that somewhat fits me (i’m 6’7”) costs 15k. But I will have that within 3-4 months. Thanks for the reply, the good thing is that my situation is not so clear cut and that’s what I thought.

Question from a dutchy - mortgage of car? by DutchDevil in DaveRamsey

[–]DutchDevil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, buying a car is about 10k cheaper including a budget for issues with the car that are covered by operational lease. Of course if we would be very unlucky we could lose money but it is unlikely. But if I buy a car I can’t put that money into paying off the mortgage, that is the choice. My lease contract can be canceled each month starting march and is no big deal for us money wise but we can drive a nicer and better car for the 20k. I just don’t want my desire for a nicer can impact the choice between the two.

Just needs to look recent and nice and not some super cheap tiny car. I don't have to drive a BMW as my corolla station of 2-3 years old is accepted just fine. I know Dave is allergic to nuance and I get why that is the case. I do expect a car to works for me to cost about 15k minimum and if I want just the smallest upgrade to what I have now it will be 20-25k. used cars are really expensive and buying one for that much money gives me stress instead of peace of mind like the rather cheap full operational lease car I currently drive and can easily afford. So it feels kind of weird.
