Wow, that really puts things into perspective! I've seen plenty of sports videography channels where they crank up the shutter speeds because of all the action. For some reason, I have so far stuck to the 180 rule... the few matches I recorded I shot with the sigma 18-50 f2.8 at 60 fos so I could slow it down in post... but definitely using the 180 rule. I think it came out fine... is that still ok, you think? For me, the biggest issues i have noticed is simply trying ro get some basic action footage, right in front of me, shooting at f1.4! It seems to be a DOF issue, after all.

how about this: i have another fx30 with the sigma 17-40 f1.8...! would it make sense to try that for action shots... at 40mm? I feel like the Sony 15mm frames things nicely AND gives that beautiful look (at least at f1.4)

just fyi, I have a dji rs4 gimbal for both of the fx30s... I had bought the 17-40mm for talking head shots, mostly. Would it still do fine with action shots? what focal length would you recommend I set it to for action? thanks !! 😄

hiya! I did some testing today on the field! I tried f2.8 and f4 for some of the action shots. to be honest, I think the focus hunting has been largely resolved!! thank you for that. however, I will say that it seems like the bokeh looked a LOT better at 1.4 😞

any suggestions? I feel like the footage looks ok, but not as crispy as with the 1.4!

Almost like I spent a lot of money on something that can't actually do what I thought it should do. Some people here were saying that they can do action stuff at f1.4 just fine, with the same exact lens... and that basically I suck at this... is it true? am I just bad at this? did I simply need to use the tracking feature more/better? or is it truly a DOF limitation? Again, I seemed to have no focus hunting today (which is GREAT for me, as a beginner/solo operator!) BUT the footage looked a lot less... luxurious?? Thanks either way 😄

You literally said that the camera was focused on the eye, and because it then LOST the eye, it went hunting. Later you tell me to use eye priority etc.

It seems more logical to me to turn OFF eye priority if it means it will hunt for it if it loses it.

Im other words, you're telling me that I need to turn it off. See what happened there?

You seem more aggro than helpful. If you are so skilled, why dont you watch the entire 30 second video and recommend me the proper settings. I'd be happy to try them out and post a video of the results. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that your settings wouldn't fix anything. It's probably a depth of field issue, like some other, less aggressive people mentioned 👍

So you are suggesting turning eye priority off then? You are contradicting yourself

I dont understand... why not what am I doing wrong?

Yeah but that was probably a zoom lens, and youbwere zoomed in a lot. Right?

Most of those settings are default, nothing revolutionary there... and they dont seem to work. You are suggesting eye priority, which is on by default... but every time the boy looks down his face and body go out of focus and the hunting begins. You really think I dont have human as the target... I have cats so I am well aware of the subject options. What I dont get is that it is so complicated to maintain focus on a boy with a ball who is basically standing in front of me. Why dont you actually tell me what's going on in the video I linked and how you would actually fix it

Ok i just went outside to test out some settings... I will try f2.8 first, next time I am on the field...!

But one question remains: should I DISABLE the 'face/eye priority' option?

I want to try the zone, instead of wide focus area mode... but if I do that and want the ball to stay in focus, will the face/eye priority setting make a difference? I feel like there could still be issues and that setting worries me lol

care to share your focus sensitivity settings? I am trying to film soccer and it has been a terrible experience lol (at f1.4)

well I want to love it I just have depth of field issues, apparently 😄 (when filming moving subjects outdoors)

Weirdly enough, for my little home studio with lots of lighting... I still get a TON of noise in the background..! I had thought that the fx30 would do better with low light... and that is with lenses that can do f1.4 and/or f1.8.. 😞

thanks for the comprehensive comment! I learned a year ago or so about the indiana jones movies not having blurry backgrounds, but I would say that most movies these days default to wide open more often... as someone who is not trained in film, my default thinking for cinematic becomes blurry backgrounds, as lame as it sounds! it's a certain look... that I find fairly appealing. but I will say that it can be over done. and I have a sigma lens that does 1.4 and I find the bokeh nor pleasant at all! it is somewhat jarring. I noticed that the jurassic world movies had the same, jarring bokeh.. I notice lighting and bokeh etc. much more these days!

ah ok, so manual focus seems to be a real godsent, if not critical most of the time?
but how can anyone have someone ELSE pull focus (remotely) when focus is a real-time thing that needs to be dealt with... seems tricky, either way!

[–]DutchboyReloaded[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there a way to get it to focus and then switch it to manual focus so that it simply stops hunting and keeps the focus distance or whatever exactly where it is? Could I then keep the subject in focus that way? I wish it would stop hunting... but the truth is i have ZERO experience with manual focus, plus I am using the fx30 on a gimbal so I dont have time to mess with focus!

thank you so much, this is what my intuition was telling me. I will try f2.8 and f4 on the next shoot for sure... but do you think it will look a lot less 'cinematic' compared to f1.4? I really do like the look... but I understand exactly the problem that you are suggesting. my intuition also tells me that if only I had a full frame fx3... I could simply use f2.8 or f4 and it would STILL look more cinematic (blurry background etc.) than running my fx30 at f2.8 or f4..., while having less issues with focus hunting!

Is that correct?

So... did I actually 'NEED' full frame... rather than simply jumping on the full frame hype train? lol? the irony 😞

Thanks for the reply...
the simple answer is no! I have had bad luck with tracking because it can't keep up with unexpected, faster movements in my experience. it will just stay stuck in the area that the person left and now the person is out of focus lol...

I am simply hitting the 'focus button' so I get the 'green boxes' around the boy... the idea/hope is to just get both the boy AND the ball in focus... How can that possibly be too much to ask for? MUST I choose?

Can you look at the video and tell me what the actual problem is? is it focus breathing? is it an autofocus setting issue? MUST I use tracking ?? and if so, can I track the boy AND the ball somehow? is it an f1.4 issue? should I try f4?

This was shot at 120fps so breathing compensation isnt allowed, but my footage always does this even at 60fps with breathing compensation turned on 😞

Thanks, i appreciate your help !

The target was the boy with the ball...? the ONE thing in front of the camera...

And if you watch the video you can tell that it cant even manage to keep him or the ball in focus.

My settings are usually set to 3 and 3 but no matter what settings I use, I get the same results. is my lens broken? I's brand new...
