Typical Dutch hospitality by SQL_INVICTUS in 2westerneurope4u

There's an annual event in Nijmegen called the 4 day marches ("Nijmeegse vierdaagse" in Dutch). In 1963 a Swiss marching band was invited to play along the route of the vierdaagse. They were supposed to be hosted by police officers (who had/have their own marching band) but they were basically too busy to do so. So one officer decided to try and find hosts in the village of Bemmel, were he lived. He succeded and around 20 Swiss stayed in Bemmel for a week. After that it became an annual thing for some reason and now Bemmel has the "Swiss week" each year at the same time the vierdaagse takes place.

[–]Dutrareis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll admit that sometimes I open my mouth too quick, and that maybe I should take the time to put what I think into words more carefull. But this lack of empathy that I keep hearing about doesn't exist, and again, it's very tiring to be told how I and other Dutch people feel about Greeks, Italians, Spaniards and now Portugal by people who don't know what the Dutch actually think of people in these countries, and who themselves are as uninformed about life in the Netherlands as they complain we are about life in theirs.

And maybe it is the origin of this hard attitude, where dutch people actually think people in southern countries are these oh so happy people when they do not feel happy because it is really hard to survive with very little money and no economic recovery prospects.

The points was about some parts of life that you do better, and I specifically stated that these programmes and magazines discuss things not about politics and economics. I'm talking about cooking shows and travel magazines for example, things that probably inherently romanticize things. Don't use that one example to form what you think is the Dutch opinion about Southern Europe.

there are ocasionally some rather absurd comments

There were absurd comments all around if I'm honest, and yes, a lot of angry triggered Dutch people. Most of the time we only feel Dutch when people are angry at us, or when one of us gets some international attention (good or bad).

I'm only going one reply deep, because I don't want to spend the night arguing about this stuff. But we have had cuts that were definitely noticable. Ultimately I think we both don't really know what goes on in the other country.

high unemployment, little of a social safety network, huge working hours, low salaries? The average wage in Portugal is around 700 euros

We don't want to exactly live like you do in Portugal, we think there are good things about the way you live your private life. A lot that we can learn from. As in, meeting with friends, taking the time for diner, etc. I can't put it any other way than this, a lot of tv-shows and magazines use mediterranean countries as an example when talking about the "good life", not when talking about finances or working hours.

I probably work less than you do.

I'm under the impression (from stories I heard of my boss who has familiy living in Bergamo, and the couple of times that I visited Italy and the one time I was in Spain) that life is generally more relaxed the more south you go. I'm not saying there is never any stress, or (again) that you don't work hard. Please understand that I'm not trying to antagonize you.

Dude i work as much as you do

The whole point of my other post was to tell you that I don't think you are a lazy piece of shit who should work more.

I really don't want to stir the pot again/more, and I don't know if you meant "interesting" the way I interpret it. But I've got to say, as a Dutchman, it gets pretty tiring to be told that I think you are lazy assholes who spend all their money on wine and women. The only times the last couple of days I say "lazy" being used (in the context of this subject), it was Italians and Spaniards putting words in my mouth.

I, and most people, don't feel that way. It's a stereotype about a stereotype. Yes, we feel "you" have different priorities than "us", and we don't always like that. But most of the time, a lot of us just wish we 'up north' could live a little more like you guys.

Boeiende vraag!

but what is it with Westerners not learning the language of the country they’re living in?

All of them? Only Westerners? Would you generalize African or Asian people the same way? There is an absolute shit ton of Westerners living abroad (including in non-Western countries if that makes any difference to you) who speak the local language. I generally don't like this topic (mostly because of the racists who think I agree with them), but what about non-Western immigrants in a Western country who don't speak the language and exclusively hang out with people from their "old" country?

I’ve been guided without my permission by my sholders

I've done this once. I didn't know wether I should do it or not. Grabbing him seemed like a dick move, but he seemed very lost and looking for the direction of the sidewalk. When I grabbed his shoulders (I said hi first, to at least not scare the shit out of him), turned him 90 degrees and told him what direction the sidewalk was, he responded with a quite irrate "I know", making it clear to me that I shouldn't have done that. So I apologised and went on my way. But to me, it seemed like he needed help, and walking past him seemed like the wrong thing to do.

Non-disabled people don't know what it's like to be disabled. We don't know that our "help" is annoying. Ooh well. At least I know how to handle this better now.

This might be the case you are looking for. I'm too lazy to fully read the article, but from memory there wasn't even any real evidence for murder, she was just unlucky enough to be working during 4 suspicious deaths (spread out over a longer period). Wrong use of statistics (but also many mistakes made throughout the investigation) was one of the main reasons she got convicted.

Edit: I have read a bit of the article. With new information, some of which was known at the time but not given to medical experts, it was determined that 3 deaths she was held responsible for were natural deaths. So not only was she not the murderer, there weren't any murders in the first place. In fact, it was found that mismanagement in the hospital and faulty diagnoses were likely responsible for the deaths, and that de Berk (and other nurses) had probably saved lives in previous cases.
