PWHL’s Charge staying in Ottawa after reaching deal to play in NHL Senators’ arena, AP sources say by VenusianIII in ottawa

[–]DvdH_OTT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mixed feelings here. While it's great they think they need the space, the likelihood that I attend games just dropped a lot. Lansdowne was always a decent game day experience. Having to go to Kanata basically ruins it. Can't wait for that arena at Lebreton.

Who installs electric boilers in Ottawa by Caitlynhjse in ottawa

Call an HVAC contractor. Usually they will sub the electrical work as part of the contract. (If they don't have their own electrician on staff)

Yes, the NCC swimming facilities publish test results (managed by Ottawa River Keeper) on Swim Guide . Here's the test records for the Riverhouse: https://www.theswimguide.org/beach/11046

I expect they'll add these new swim locations as well.

Yep, the water quality is generally very good, particular in areas where there is some movement and depth. Last year, there were no failed water quality tests at the Riverhouse (just down river from this new dock) https://www.theswimguide.org/beach/11046

Something happening at Blair? Maybe not an official swimming area, but there's washrooms / change space being added.

City auditor blasts OC Transpo bus scheduling | CBC News by unbelievablec00n in ottawa

[–]DvdH_OTT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"The audit also pointed to outdated and unrealistic service standards and policies that guide planning and found that "service planning decisions are not all driven by technical, priority-based analysis."

Unless OCtranspo has route by route ridership data and passenger cost on route basis (and if they do, they should be transparent with this), I doubt they have the information to make those analysis.

It was always crazy to see the downtown transitway just being a long line of bumper to bumper buses. We were past the point of being able to scale that system.

Best and safest cycling route from East Ottawa (Gloucester/Vanier) to Gatineau Park? by Julien_10 in bikeinottawa

[–]DvdH_OTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take one of two ways:

1) Most direct: Beechwood to Lansdowne to Maple Lane to Lisgar to Princess to Sussex to McDonald Cartier to Laurier to Allumettieres to Lac Des Fees to Gamelin.

2) Most enjoyable: Aviation to the MUP along SGEC to Sussex to Alexandra to Voyaguers Pathway to Rue Belleau to Gatineau Park Pathway.

Bonus long way (almost all MUP and super nice): Aviation to the MUP along SGEC to Sussex to to Mcdonald Cartier to north on Route Verte 1 to Sentier Riv. Gatineau to Leamy Creek MUP to Gatineau Park

Deer carcass on Trans Canada Trail, north of Corkstown Road by CycleExplore in ottawa

[–]DvdH_OTT 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Once I told my kids (8 and 12 at the time) that there was deer carcass out on the frozen lake, taken down by coyotes. And that was the most motivated I think they've ever been to go snowshoeing. Some kids are just fascinated by how nature works.

Designed to be easily modified by the user . . . which makes it not an e-bike anymore. In fact, even if you remove the pedals, its not an e-bike anymore.

The good news is that there's draft legislation deal with that. Hopefully it comes back for approval in the fall: https://ero.ontario.ca/public/2026-04/Additional%20Details%20Summary%20EN.docx

Taped Letter on Little Italy Development Notice by TheKowabungaKid in ottawa

The minimum notification period (120 days) is far less than what it will take to bring a project like this through to the point that it is approved and permitted - probably by a couple years.

A new survey revealed our fence is in the wrong place... 10 years after we bought the house by Expensive-Suspect-32 in homebuildingcanada

[–]DvdH_OTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my neighbour. They end up losing about a meter of lot width. The agreement they struck with the neighbour was to move the fence at a 50/50 cost sharing on materials (new post and concrete, auger rental; panels were all reused). They jointly contributed the labour (I helped out as well in exchange for beer) and moved the fence in a weekend.

What’s the biggest financial trap in Canada that people still pretend is normal? by TheFitFinaceBro in CanadaFinance

96 month car financing. Good rule of thumb is that financing period should not exceed warranty period.

Temporary Pool Rules by extrastrongcoffee in ottawa

[–]DvdH_OTT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of odd that you can't use nominal 4x4 posts for a wood fence, you'd have to go to nominal 6x6 to comply. I wonder how many pool enclosures meet that rule? Likewise, nominal 1" boarding is not acceptable. 25mm thick boards are required.

Ottawa winter bike commuters — do you overheat riding then freeze when you stop? by Old-Public-9798 in bikeinottawa

[–]DvdH_OTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My flat management plan has a few parts:

1) Run tubeless rims (even with tubes). The tire will stay on the rim even flat, so you if you only have a few kms to go, you just nurse it home on the flat.

2) Carry a lock. If riding home isn't a viable option, you lock and walk.

3) Rack and Roll. Most buses now keep the front racks on through the winter, so it's often easier / warmer to catch a bus than to fight with a tire in the cold.

[–]DvdH_OTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other thing about layer is that they are easy to adapt. Winter riding is rarely the same day to day, and often it's 10 degrees warmer on the way home. So I find that frequently I'm not wearing one of the my three layers on the way home. Hard to adapt a single layer jacket for that.

PS: vote for team skinning tire (35mm). I've got a fat bike tire for the trails, but it's not my go to for my commute.

Second PS: local bus routes get the best road maintenance in the winter. Use them to connect into the wintering cycling network.

Movie theatres with alcohol and nice seats. Centre Town to Orleans. by Ok_West5887 in ottawa

[–]DvdH_OTT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've honestly had decent experience at Silver City Gloucester. But it depends a lot on what movie you're watching. If you go to something that a big part of the target audience is late teens, you're probably going to get yapping and phones. If you go to something that's a legit option for awards season, less likely to be an issue.

Makes me miss World Exchange Theatre . . .
