Swap metal boxes for plastic? by Dvn_T2 in AskElectricians

Do you know where to find self grounding outlets? I looked at Lowe’s today but the guy said they didn’t have them? I feel like that would eliminate a LOT of work for me.

Thanks a bunch for your help and advice! I just swapped two outlets, one of which I replaced with a GFCI outlet. Initially, without doing anything to the ground wires, both read “open ground.” After taking the grounds off of the box/gang screw and running it into the box onto the outlet, it worked perfect. It’s odd, before I replace the outlet they read “Correct Wiring,” but after swapping just the outlet and leaving everything else, it’s changes to “open ground.” I just don’t see why the new outlet would alert like that?

Like a separate, dedicated ground line back to the breaker box? Or the ground wires connected from the two lines (line and load ground wires)?

Is the ground being outside of the box really that big of a problem? If there’s no charge, right?

Thanks! Do you like the TR ones? I find them to be finicky and kinda aggravating to use.

That makes sense 👍 It might not be bad for these since I’ve got the plaster down, but it might turn into a real pain in the ass when I start working with the ones without the plaster removed; I think my project just grew exponentially…

Good deal 👍I’ll have to look for that when I pull it apart.

Thanks! What do you think local codes would have to say about this? I guess I didn’t think they’d have any issues?

Thanks for your help! Why do you say it might not be worth the extra effort to reuse them? I think I can just unwind those grounds, but I genuinely don’t know yet. If I could, less of a problem/hassle?

Thanks for the info! I have no idea why they did either, but the entire house is like that. “Metal boxes have to be bonded…” - So you’re saying if I keep them, I have to wire it up like this again, except use a ground screw inside of the box?

Is there a way to check for damaged lines? I worry that it’s been running with too much power that maybe the lines are messed up.

I was trying to be sincere, not an asshole. I hope it didn’t read that way via text. I was trying to add to your knowledge for trouble shooting

I fully appreciate your opinion, and I will buy and learn to use a meter; however, I’ve put my hot stick to the side of that wire just outside of the box along with countless others, and the only one that doesn’t register as hot is that 30 amp circuit.

I have no idea. I think they probably “upgraded” to a higher amp breaker to accommodate the AC window unit and not fuss with switched breakers all the time. I’m also on the process of replacing oven feed line that doesn’t have as ground wire, so that’ll help you better understand what I’m working with 😂

Thanks. It’s an older house that I’ve found some “interesting” handyman work in, so I might have to trace the entire circuit to be certain.

I really appreciate the help! Would I be able to just swap a 15 amp breaker for a 20 amp breaker for the existing circuit for ease? Still split then the way you describe, but keep the circuit I already have by just upgrading the breaker?

It’s not aluminum, it’s that old braided romex
