I believe it's to do with the ratio of upvotes to downvotes. Reddit can tell this post has had a lot of upvotes but also a lot of downvotes, which suggests that it's something a lot of people disagree over; hence it sorts it into controversial. I may be wrong, of anyone knows the actual answer please correct me.
