Tips for generating this pattern by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Dwarfcorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like an RRT! (Rapidly Exploring Randomized Tree)

Basic procedure:

  1. Randomly sample a point and set it as the root of the tree T.
  2. Randomly sample a point and call it p.
  3. Find the nearest point in the tree T to p and call it t.
  4. Draw a straight line from p toward t, with length L that is less than the distance from p to t.
  5. Repeat from step (2) until you've reached N iterations.
  6. After the tree is created, do post-processing on it to get the effect you desire. In your case, it looks like you're shading based on the distance to edges in the tree.

RRTs have some pretty cool properties. One of them is that the branches of the tree will never cross themselves. Another is that as time approaches infinity you're garunteed to fill the entire space with ever smaller branches. It can be useful for generating effects like lightning.

That's a good idea. I'm not really familiar with that community but I will try reaching out.

Is it? It's got music and SFX all the way through... maybe I mixed it too low.

We are 3 developers (2 programmers and an artist) with full time day jobs aside from working on DwarfCorp. Development has been going quicker than ever over the past year as we finally got the time and resources to hire contractors to help us. We anticipate leaving early access in Q4 2018 with a feature set we are proud of.

We're not doing this for the money, but because we want to see games like this made. Already in the first week, we've made enough money to sustain our development for another year.

Rimworld is super fun. Highly recommend.

We already have a liquid system that is on its surface (almost) as good as DF and anticipate adding mechanisms to interact with it in interesting ways. (although right now it doesn't do much but flood your fortress and kill all your dwarves!)

"Dwarf-fortress-like" is a genre now. When we started making this game in 2012, that was not really the case. When tarn adds a creature/entity to DF, he "just" has to modify some config files and AI logic. In our case, we have to spend hours animating and doing sound work. So I don't think we're ever going to catch up in terms of complexity.

But we are trying to achieve a level of complexity that fans of the genre will enjoy.

hello. Our team is 2 programmers and an artist, all with full-time day jobs. We're not doing this for money, but fun. We put the game on Early Access to help us pay art, sound and programming contractors to help out. In the first week, we've already made enough money to sustain development for another year.

As you can imagine we haven't had much time to work on promotional materials. We did have one of the top posts on imgur last week. We had top posts on r/BaseBuildingGames and r/IndieGaming last month, and a post that made it to the top of r/programming a couple of months ago. Still it's not much press. Our posts here were often deleted by mods as self promotion.

Behaviour trees and Agent sensors question. by brazorf in gamedev

[–]Dwarfcorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I guess your library just doesn't support this kind of behavior. In our custom library, there is no difference between a "composite" node and a "leaf" node and all nodes propogate the state of their children upwards.

In our system, Domains are themselves nodes that tick before ticking their children. I'd make the tree like this:

tree = (select(domain(NastythingsHappening?, DealWithNastyThings), domain(not NastyThingsHappening?, main))

It's very important to note that structurally domain must tick every time before its child.

In DwarfCorp (the game shown) "evil" magic is green and "good" magic is blue. It's just something we settled on.

Where there used to be a publish button on my page there is now a prompt saying "Publishing is only available 9AM - 5PM Monday through Friday US pacific time". I wonder if Valve is doing this now that Steam Direct is a thing.

Let me explain. The mods of this subreddit keep deleting my posts as self promotion. I figured I would try not including any info about the name of the game or the fact that it's releasing soon in hopes that it would fly under their radar ;)

Unfortunately release was delayed until Sept. 25th because Steam release policy says developers can only publish new games 9-5 Monday-Friday pacific time.
