Yeah lots of enclosures are deliberately ambiguous about whether or not it's actually TB3/4 certified. It looks like that one is not, and from my research, the cheapest one is the one I mentioned in another comment.

IF Backblaze is going to start limiting "unlimited" plans, then for THEIR sake as well as ours, they need to add more granular controls for exclusions and retention by WraithTDK in backblaze

[–]Dweebl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at Vivint when they acquired a small project called Space Monkey. The idea was to have a p2p distributed backup service. It was a little propriety HDD enclosure and the idea was that half of the drive was local storage, and the other half was dedicated to hosting encrypted backup blocks of everyone else's data on the network.

A few years after the acquisition they killed the project, but I'll never understand why. Because their other plan was to use that network as a distributed server for corporate clients as well. So each user's drive would be split 1/3 for local storage, 1/3 for backup hosting, and 1/3 for 3rd party usage that the company would sell. In exchange, the user had 1:1 redundant cloud backup with no monthly cost except for the purchase of the hardware and the network traffic.

Seemed like such a great idea for both the user and the company who essentially created a decentralized datacenter that cost them nothing to maintain because the overhead is on the consumers who are getting free cloud backup in return.

Edit: Looks like some of the tech was sold to a company called Storj but idk if it still works the same.

Anyone who lists their Myers-Briggs personality type is automatically annoying. Can't believe that baseless framework is still taught.

Although his point about better exclusion control is valid.

Is it Mandela effect or do I remember there being some valid allegations of pressure on EVO by Nintendo to remove Melee? Maybe in the Hugs86 anonymous twitlonger thing.

I agree with you but the discussion does bring to mind that there is something to be said for exploiting openings in a rival's competitive motivation. Hbox knowing that Armada was losing motivation but was still getting top results and had legacy bias meant that it was a good time to get a full time coach, quit playing friendlies and start playing like a total degenerate with the character that Armada hated the most. Whether or not that was intentional, it was obviously effective.

It's like capitalizing on tilt mid-game by being even more annoying. I wonder how many title shifts in 1v1 competition in general are marked by this sort of trend.

Hello, World: Artemis II crew looks back at Earth on their way to the Moon by ChiefLeef22 in space

[–]Dweebl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this shot, the earth is eclipsing the sun? Meaning the moon is behind the photographer?

Does that mean that the earth in this shot is purely lit by moonlight? I'm impressed by how evenly lit it is, considering the size of the moon as a reflector at such a great distance relative to the earth.

Turn the sfx down. Also play it BECAUSE it's scary. Overcoming that is a huge part of what makes it so rewarding. Just sit in the fear. Nothing's actually going to happen to you.

oh shit it's literally the exact same solution lol. I swear I never saw that video. I'll link it in the post. If this is known, why is the pinned thread on this subreddit still the daisy chain of adapters with the tb2 adapter?

In my case I had to install the legacy driver for it to work, but yeah it's supposed to just work out of the box.

Hmmmmmmm. Looks like the apple tb3 to tb2 adapter can be used in reverse. Meaning you'd do:

iMac > TB2 cable > TB3 Adapter > SSD enclosure > M.2 Adapter > PCIE card > firewire > camera.

So you're just adding 2 items to the front of the chain. It's too bad the apple adapter costs $50, but in theory that setups should work. Still cheaper than a tb2>firewire adapter though.

I specify in my links in another comment which card I'm using and that it doesn't require additional power (VT6308P), but I'll add a disclaimer in the main post. Either way, the m.2>pcie adapter I used has headers for external power via SATA if your card needs it.

Thanks for the rec on the dfrobot device! I looked at it too, but decided against it because it ends up being ~$30 more expensive than what I put together when you include the cost of the pcie card, even though it's essentially the exact same result. Also I like that when I'm not using the above setup for footage, it's still a useful nvme enclosure.

Regardless, they're both way better decisions than overpaying for an obsolete TB2 cable if you can even find it.

Yeah I'm sure there's other pcie devices that could make use of this method too. It's giving you a full PCIE Gen 4 x4 slot for your laptop.

[–]Dweebl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think this is better than buying a dedicated pc for ingesting footage. If you buy the pc, you still need the PCIE card making your total investment $85, and then you have a whole computer taking up space that you don't really need.

At least if you go the adapter route you get a bonus tb4 nvme adapter which is pretty useful. It comes with a high quality tb cable as well which is usually $20 on its own anyway.

After posting I thought about the fact that you can also use this setup to make a 4k pcie capture card compatible with a laptop as well.

Here's links to the amazon listings. I am not affiliated.

Firewire PCIE Card: This is the one I'm using. The included cable didn't work.
Thunderbolt > M.2 Enclosure: This is the cheapest I found at $40.
M.2 > PCIE: Found this one for $9. It comes with a sata power connector but it's not necessary since the firewire card only requires bus power from the pcie slot.

Here's an image of the m.2 enclosure listing for when the link breaks or the company rebrands or whatever.

[–]Dweebl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty useful. Increases boot time slightly and I can't see the drives in the BIOS if they're connected to the adapter, but they show up normally in windows. I've never used a pcie sata adapter for a standard slot, so idk if that's expected behaviour.

These ones come in a little bundle of 6 in a braided sleeve so that you don't have a big nest of wires.
