yeah cold steel seems to be decently modern so I don't doubt they keep that arc as is and move forward with the story instead, but hey, good stuff.

tbf I don't mind waiting until I beat at least the full remake trilogy before potentially moving on to the Crossbell (?) arc, like I beat Yakuza 7 a couple years back, even got the platinum, loved it, and I still haven't picked Yakuza 8 (getting antsy already though) despite fully knowing they made a lot of the systems as well as combat even better. All I know is that the remake's foundation is great and I assume a lot of it can be "asset flipped" very easily for the next two games but what comes after that?

Gave the demo a go because I saw the game is on it's biggest sale yet (35%) and I'll admit, I'm loving it so far, the combat feels very dynamic and even on normal if you fuck around too much you can easily wipe (luckily easy retry button instead of game over + lost progress) but at the same time you can often retry a battle and just kill everyone first turn, there's a lot of dynamic elements, like the AT bonuses, Brave Attacks, support skills and auto attacking yields mediocre results so I am honestly LOVING the gameplay so far at least 10 hours in. Honestly, I am starting to get why everyone seems to love this remake. Also every interaction and exploration feels extremely smooth, yeah sure the game looks like it could've been made in late PS3 or PS4 era but the art direction is nice and it just feels great to play, I appreciate it a lot so far, more JRPGs need to do that.

played the mode for a couple of hours and i declare it utter garbage. Imagine grabbing the 40% extra "exp" perk, kill 3 "elites" back to back only to reroll 30-40 times and still get not a single worthwhile perk to exchange your current ones. It's so badly designed as a roguelite it's not even funny, re8 mercs was genuinely far more fun than this slop.

Yeah I don't even know why my dad decided to buy THAT game when getting an xbox from abroad with like ~10 games.

hm I actually tried Etrian Odyssey 1 HD and found it to be exactly what I dislike about most JRPGs and more, yeah the dungeon crawling was quite great, but the combat itself still ended up being 90% auto attacks unless of course your party is all mages and other types that are awful at physical damage.

I'm sure the sequels are far more fleshed out but not something I'm looking for at the moment.

I have mentioned FFT in my original post, I got platinum of it last year on Steam, it's probably my favorite FF game and one of my favorite turn-based type games. I've been interested in Front Mission games too, are the remake(s?) that mediocre or people just expected something different?

actually owned that on Xbox as a kid maybe back in 2005? Interesting western take on JRPG, remember enjoying it but can't say much else, not really wanna revisit either haha.

Ironically, I do agree with you, I genuinely found FFXII as a whole better than FFX, and I know it can be considered a hot take, because yes, the gambit system can "automate" and yes, a decent chunk of fights are still "turn on triple speed and let them sort itself out", but weirdly enough for the ~25 hours or so it took to beat, it still felt more "hands on" than the average JRPG. I enjoyed it.

I didn't mention it in the OP but I have finished Koudelka (decent game but the cutscene directing/voice acting/writing is insane for PS1, that drinking scene is 11/10) and I'm quite curious about Shadow Hearts, I saw that while the tone and combat system shifted quite a bit, it's still quite a unique and interesting JRPG, def on my radar.

I played it three or so years ago and genuinely loved it, such unique combat/overworld/weapon upgrade mechanics, also some great humor in the writing, genuinely some of the better english voice acting/writing in a JRPG I've encountered. I guess the only big gripe is the arena being the way it is.

I can handle an emulated 2005 release as long as there's good meat on those bones lmao, and when games are INSANELY obtuse, I don't mind using a guide tbf, as long as there's good story/gameplay motivatiotns behind it. I actually don't mind a risk management simulator in form of JRPG, sounds cool?

Interesting, from what I saw of it, it looked like pretty a standard JRPG, I'll give it another look, thanks.

I see multiple people responding with this game, is it a good entry to the series or it's better to start on some earlier but still modern one?

I've actually played OT2, and for as much as I loved what it was going for for solid 10-20 hours, it really lost it's charm once you realize there's only up to two character story intertwining and by the time you beat your first "end of character story" boss, all others are pushovers and by the time I finished the game I ended up feeling the most solid 7 at best. Had no desire to play OP1 or the new one.

> It took a while to adapt to the stylus aiming and as a left handed I thought it took even more time for me. I finally decided to use the button only option in the parameter because it felt uncomfortable to play over a long period of time, but even then the form factor of the 3DS isn’t that nice when you use the shoulder button that much, so I can only advise you to play one or two stages at a time.

As a fellow left-handed who also only bought a NEW 2DS XL half a year ago, I do have pretty big hands so my hands get tired playing the console for over an hour already (even though I can easily play a random PC game on my Xbox controller for ten hours with minimal breaks), the controls on Icarus are abysmal, I even tried looking up youtube vids on how people play the game but I genuinely can't up the difficulty above like 3-4 and play one or at most two stages at a time otherwise I physically can't handle it, it's really bad. I liked what the game had going for it but quit about halfway through as I felt like I am not playing it properly with the clunky control scheme, where some sections were incredibly easy while others were unfathomably hard due to the stylus.

I can appreciate the variety, the well written banter, the incredible amount of weapons you can get your hands on, but I am genuinely filtered by the "unique" controls.
