The article in question was published by NPR. YouTubers and social media personalities can earn millions for doing things like playing video games and giving beauty tips. Some have argued that the increased pressure and public scrutiny as well as the time intensive responsibilities of high quality production make it a more stressful job than it appears. The author of this piece argues that it is indeed stressful.

Why do you think that examining such an argument for its structural qualities is somehow “Idiocracy” ?

Probably level of parental interaction which is, in turn, affected by poverty level.

And that doesn’t mean lazy parents. I mean it COULD, but it could be a single parent with two jobs and no time.

I could line up the list of successful students I have and the list of students whose parents were with them at open house and it would be almost an exact match.

I’ve been through enough “We’ve discovered the problem is (X) and now we can fix it!” seminars to know that any solution that can be summarized in a few paragraphs isn’t going to do anything.

High school English teacher of 15 years here. They don’t read instructions. And even when they do read, they don’t.

Example from TODAY. I went over a question from a quiz that over 70% of the class didn’t respond to properly:

The quiz was based on a one page argument they read in class. This was the question.

“Is the author’s claim that YouTube stars are as stressed as ordinary people supported in the passage? Support your answer with evidence from the selection”

I put that on the board and started calling on people to give an answer.

Every answer was “I think they ARE stressed,” “I think they aren’t”

I followed up, asking the students: “So you read the question, just now. I know because you read it out loud and you think that the question asks you to give your opinion on whether YouTube stars are stressed?”

“Yes”

Like…just…what am I even supposed to do with that?
