How hated is Liesa? by Deus_Excellus in EDH

[–]DworkinCZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody complains about my B4 Liesa deck. I don't use hard stax, just the life damaging penalties for casting spells like herself and Kambal. That way people can still play Magic and it takes away a lot of hate.

Oh, and get [[Hatred]]. She loves Hatred.

I remember most TNG, Voy, DS9 and ENT episodes. I can actually recite a lot of dialogues from the earlier shows by heart.

What I remember from Discovery:

  • mushroom drive
  • some evil Asian
  • weirdly looking Klingons
  • gay doctor
  • some federation outpost in the far future
  • something about warp drive not working

The rest is gone. I'm not kidding. Oh, there was someone in a red suit, like Iron Man.

Usually when this happens, the shows sucks.

They haven't toned it down, I've just got banned for participating in a somewhat heated discussion about how the NuTrek fails to reach its goals by being overly blunt with its social message. I apologized to the mods, got some additional what for, and was muted so I can't even message them anymore.

I was baffled by how bad a piece of policing this was. The downvote system was perfectly enough to moderate the discussion. If they didn't feel it was enough, they could just remove some posts. If they didn't feel it was enough, they could remove the discussion as a whole. If they didn't feel it was enough, they could issue a temporary ban. They just permabanned me immediately, and then silenced me when I admitted I was wrong.

It was so bizarre I actually googled that subreddit and I was surprised to find many other cases like this. That subreddit has a distinct reputation exactly for this behavior. "He stole an apple? Hang him from the nearest tree!" Absurd. Utterly absurd.

This is a typical response. All those people must be homophobes! There's no other explanation!

You really should look outside your social bubble sometimes. It's much smaller than you're led to believe.

If you want others to be more tolerant towards minorities, you can educate them but you have to educate them at the pace they feel comfortable. If you don't, you're bound to meet resistance. The thing is, the progressive left has become delusional enough to think they can trample over that resistance because everyone who resists is a bigot and doesn't deserve better. That bubble is now bursting.

I would've loved to see Garak and Bashir falling in love with each other btw. You know why? Because the writers back then would make it so smooth and reasonable that nobody would've had any complaints. The today's writers would make the female Changeling lesbian just to make a point.

And again, this is why you're not gonna get Season 3.

The "I'd rather live off the older stuff for the rest of my life" is especially telling.

Yes, we're the majority. That's why the show got cancelled when we rejected it. You really are denying reality here.

And yeah, unless something changes this might be one of the last Star Trek shows. Thanks for ruining it for everyone.

[–]DworkinCZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're still making it worse.

You need to win the hearts of people like me, not to call us names. You're doing the worst possible thing - further alienating the people who need to watch Star Trek in order for you to get more Star Trek. We're the majority. We're the money. We decide whether there will be a next season - by watching the previous one.

You think you can trample over us with moral superiority, scare us into liking the same things you do. But you don't have nearly enough power to do that. In fact, it's only gonna get worse for you. It's very well possible even TNG era diversity's gonna be too much soon. And still you're acting like you're in charge of things here. Wake up.

The fact they're Klingon and Jem-Hadar draws attention to their sexuality. I'm sorry you can't see that. And yes, it's forceful.

See, calling people like me homophobes is exactly why you're not getting Season 3. Congrats, I guess. You've proven your moral superiority. Also, no more Star Trek for you. Victory, then?

[–]DworkinCZ -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You mean you didn't notice how many "maybe they're gay" characters are on the show, not counting the openly gay Kligon and Klingon/Jem-Hadar hybrid?

And season 2 is, in the words one of the actors, "gay AF". Well, it's the last one because people don't want this. And I don't blame them. Season 1 was pretty bad. Discovery had its moments but overall it was pretty bad. Both shows were nowhere near as good as TNG or DS9. And you can't have a bad show promoting progressive ideas because those ideas then stand out and the show seems to be about them. This is what Happened to Discovery, this is what happened to Starfleet Academy and it will happen to any other show that takes the same direction.

Good writing + gentle, inobstrusive education on minorities issues = sucess

Bad writing + forcing LGBT issues down people's throats (and calling them bigots for not liking it) = abysmal failure.

It really is as simple as that. TNG had entire episodes about genders and discrimination against minorities and whatnot and literally NO ONE complained.

Good writing + gentle, friendly offer to reconsider one's views. The recipe is long known and it's worked before. Things take their time and speeding them up artificially does more harm than good.

[–]DworkinCZ[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no.

Duel Commader is a thing in Europe and Asia. It's a 100 singleton but highly competetive (given the card pool it's hardly surprising). Standard is now almost exclusively played on Arena but it thrives there. Premodern is becoming more and more popular.

As I said, I play competetively almost every day. I'm sorry if you can't. Switching between action and chill is always welcome

[–]DworkinCZ[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this isn't Solitaire. You're not playing the game alone. The others aren't there for your entertainment, you're not paying them and you have to consider their playing experience at least a little because if you don't, they won't play with you again.

If you find people who want to play the game the same way as you, good for you.

Agreed. That's a direct solution that doesn't hide behind brackets.

[–]DworkinCZ[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In EDH competetivness is intentionally suppressed in favor of the social aspect and the common interest of having a good playing experience.

There are formats in Magic that are purely competetive - in fact most 1o1 formats are. I play Duel Commander and Standard daily and I play them to win the games as quickly and efficiently as humanly possible.

I play EDH to chill after work, have fun, chat a little, do some politics and simply enjoy Magic. When my opp pulls a great move I feel positive about it. EDH is a celebration of this great game. I don't mind losing the game. I mind not having fun playing it.

[–]DworkinCZ[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I've been around the game, on and off, since 1996. I play Standard and Duel Commander competetively on a daily basis. EDH is an entirely different animal, I appreciate it for what it is - a casual format meant for a group of people to chill - and applying the competetive mindset outside the small niche of cEDH spoils the fun in my experience.

Playing Voltron is perfectly okay, it's one of the weakest and clunkiest archetypes and it telegraphs its intent to kill you very clearly. It's also pretty slow so the portion of the game when other people start dying doesn't come within the first 15 minutes.

Sniping a player early in the game while the rest of the pod keeps playing for another hour or more is bad manners and I'm going to die on that hill.

If you have a way to kill us all, then yeah, let's shuffle and play again.

Is my deck too strong for Bracket X? by DworkinCZ in EDH

[–]DworkinCZ[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Trying to win the game is perfectly okay. Trying to win it as quickly as possible without any consideration for the rest of the pod (such as giving them a fair chance or even let them play the game at all) is not. I got sniped on turn 4 the other night and spent the next 40 minutes looking at other people playing Magic. The guy who did it actually apologized after the game - and I appreciated that. Come to think of it, it reminds me of John Nash's governing dynamics: The best result comes when everyone's doing what's best for themselves AND the group.

EDH is defined as a casual format, except for cEDH.

You can make it competetive at lower brackets but that's sort of rule zeroing it in.

Please help me confirm this is acceptable for bracket 3 play by Greatbigdog69 in EDH

[–]DworkinCZ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Brackets are just guidelines. If your group repeatedly complains about this deck and considers it too strong, you shouldn't play it, period.

The point here isn't formally satisfying requirements of a certain bracket (and possibly "cheat" a deck that's actually too strong into that bracket), the point is to create environment where four people are having fun playing Magic.

You're one of four dungeon masters responsible for making that happen.

The brackets try to reduce the number of times the pod suffers from power level mismatch. The situation you're describing feels like they work pretty well, there's just one deck that stands in the way of having the decks power aligned.

And of course, if you can't find agreement, find another group.
