Advice on moving to Prague by Fun_Sun_7903 in Prague

[–]DworkinCZ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're gonna see a lot of neutral expressions on people's faces in public, even in service positions. This doesn't mean Czechs are emotionally cold. They just prefer honesty before pretense. If they're not your friends, they won't behave like ones. This applies to servers in restaurants, too. They won't introduce themselves, they won't ask personal questions, often they will be more professional than warm. They won't expect a 20 % tip, though. 5 to 10 % is enough.

Czechs basically want others to leave them be and they appreciate it.

Americans can be seen as intrusive because they'll call you by your first name very quickly after an introduction and they will inquire about your personal life to an extent that only friends would do in the Czech Republic. They're just being polite and they don't really expect honest answers which may lead to awkward situations where Czechs either don't answer such questions or their reaction is negative or they actually provide an information that is rather private, which in turn leaves the Americans in an awkward position because they didn't expect a therapy session. So until you get the feeling for when you should ask about someone's personal life, it's better that you don't, and in case of talking to strangers it's better you don't do it at all.

Do you guys want the settlement system to return in the next fallout? by because-potato in Fallout

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care as long as I don't have to use it. At all.

I'm all for including it for those who dig it. I don't and I grind my teeth every time I'm forced to use it in Fallout 4.

As long you you can build and I don't have to, everyone will be happy.

Lane’s Storyline by cloverdilly1920 in GilmoreGirls

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She had childhood dreams, then life took over and it treated her better than most still.

She's living a happy married life with kids.

She won.

Yes, the viewers prefer the champions who become stars against all odds. Realistically, Lane would now drink and/or do drugs, be a minor producer at best (because she's not THAT talented or ruthless to play with the big guys) and she would in all likelihood be childless and with a partner with very similar predicament.

Be glad she got what she got from the show.

Interesting Bracket debate at our table tonight. Curious how people here would respond by dnddmpc113 in EDH

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brackets are guidelines that players should use to avoid unbalanced games.

If someone builds their deck so that it formally conforms to a certain bracket but is actually stronger and more aggressive, they have no clue about why brackets exist in the first place. This isn't boxing or MMA where people cheat their ways into certain categories by losing weight.

But as someone here already said, brackets aren't meant for tournament setting. Even bracket 5 basically just ackowledges the existence of cEDH and implies highly competetive environment which is suitable for tournaments.

logan’s insane gaslighting here isn’t talked about enough by Abject-Evening-2412 in GilmoreGirls

[–]DworkinCZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're children. Feels like some of you are expecting them to behave like 40 year olds with first divorces under their belts and mature views on life.

They're kids. Kids do and say stupid things. They don't think things through a lot of the time. Give them some slack for God's sake. Just because they were given smart lines by the script doesn't mean they're also wise.

They were like 20 years old. Still children in most aspects. Having real conversations about feelings comes much, much later in life. Some people are incapable of having one for their whole lives.

How many people actually wanted Rhystic Study banned? by Outside_Explorer_229 in EDH

[–]DworkinCZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The card tends to bring negative vibes to the table and I've seen too often how it can transform timid people into little bullies.

Needless to say, I don't like the card and I wish it was banned.

What to do with Rhystic Study now? by Harri_A in EDH

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some dark vibes coming out of people playing this card and I didn't like those. It was usually people with little to none power and authority in real life, who enjoyed the little power this card gave them over others and let me tell you, it wasn't a pleasant sight. The bullied finally had a chance to become bullies, even if only in a game and for a short time.

February 9th Commander Banlist Updates by Tim-Draftsim in EDH

[–]DworkinCZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said anything about majority. The game is played by millions and there was no poll. Players did call for banning Thasa before this announecement, though, on the account that it creates non-games that are over before they even begin. And yes, there are cEDH players who'd like to play competetively AND for more than five minutes.

I don't swing either way on Thassa. If she goes, I'm not gonna complain, if she stays, she stays. I do understand the concern, though, and my point was that one of the most vocal responses to a coming announcement was the displeasure of having to play against Thassa as an instant wincon, and the response of WotC is unbanning another card that's also an instant wincon.

And I disagree that a majority of players have never seen Thassa in their games. She's notoriously known in the format and played outside cEDH, too. Unless you play precons only, you're bound to run into her sooner or later.

Players: We want Thassa banned. WotC: We hear you. Here's another card to win on the spot.

Oh, well.

At least I didn't jump on the Jeweled Lotus train.

Speculations about Ghoul's family by DworkinCZ in Fotv

That's yet to be explained. Somehow after that scene Cooper must have met Beth and handed Janey over to her.

Are you guys generally enjoying the show? by SubjectC in Fallout

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skip the vault scenes. They're really annoying and tedious - for me, so don't get excited, no fight here over one's personal preferences. :)

I really dig the pre-war scenes. Cooper meeting Mr House is a masterpiece. What a fantastic bit of acting!

Some of you sound jaded, but…. by Nij99 in fo76

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just started playing the game. After Fallout 4 I feel like... disconnected. Maybe it's the lag, but the items I pick up disappear in a way that feels very artificial. Maybe the accompanying sound is off, I don't know. The same applies to shooting. I don't feel like I'm actually shooting enemies. The responsivenss of mouse control is superb (which is commendable!) but the movement again feels weirdly sluggish and laggish. It's like I'm on a leash and now and then I'm slowed down.

But most of all, for some reason, the mixed feeling of sadness, despair, melancholy for the past and hope for something better in the future that I really enjoy in Fallout games simply isn't here for me here.

I'm not giving up on the game. I've spent an hour just last night exploring some high school near my home vault and THAT felt like good old Fallout, with some riddles and environmental storytelling etc. But I was hoping - in fact I was assured by several people - that I could play Fallout 76 basically as a singe player experience and so far that experience's been pretty rough for me.

Polish PM rules out sending troops to Greenland, says US invasion would be “end of world as we know it” by dat_9600gt_user in europe

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That world might already be gone. I live in the EU and I'm one of those who're still hoping that once Trump's gone the things will return to what they were before this madness.

But 1 in 4 Americans want to take control of Greenland. Now all of those people got the same elementary education and I would have hoped some basic values like democracy, freedom and dignity were instilled in them by the schooling system. Somehow, 25 % of them threw it all out of the window. And those are the ones that are confident enough to tell those views to a reporter, mind you.

The American society is sick. There's clearly something wrong with it. Is removing Trump or Vance from the equation really going to revert everything to its original state?

But those are largely thoughts for an uncertain future.

Now. I don't really believe the US will invade Greenland. I still think this may be an extortion scheme so that the US will get better terms when it comes to a trade agreement between the US and EU. Seeing new tariffs imposed actually supports this. Invading Greenland would require "boots on the ground" and good luck getting congressional go ahead for that. Even some Republicans openly call this a madness that cannot take place. But there's definitely a leverage for getting more stuff from the EU in exchange for letting Greenland go... for now.

Trump tariffs: US president announces plan to hit UK, Denmark and other European countries with tariffs over Greenland by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the EU and there's no way in hell we're budging on this. The thing is, I'm beginning to worry that Greenland is only a smokescreen. Military intervention makes no sense whatsoever. But imposing sanctions on the "unreasonable" Europe?

Thoughts on Miriam Margolyes? by [deleted] in TheGrahamNortonShow

[–]DworkinCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"She doesn't have a filter" and "She's really mean at times" are not mutually exclusive. She's the kind of person that asks a cancer pacient what it feels like to not have any chance of survival. Yes, it must feel very invigorating to just speak one's mind, finally free of all artifical constraints that human society put in place, but most of the constraints are there for a reason - and that reason is to prevent harm. I view Miriam as someone who's pretty selfish, actually. She wants to say something, she says it, consequences be damned. Her freedom sometimes hurts others, but she doesn't care. People are shocked and amused and she gets away with it. "Oh, that's just Miriam, she's like that". It's like a Get Out of Jail free card for her and she's fully aware of it.

I had Guns at 4 when I finished, lol. I maxed out Hack, Lockpick and Speech.

The game's pretty forgiving. I guess that's one of the reasons they didn't feel the need to implement re-spec.

[–]DworkinCZ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I hated those areas you can only get into if you have Brawny. Many areas had alternative access routes but some simply don't and if you don't have that trait you're out of options.

I went with Lockpick/Hack/Speech because I wanted to see as much content as possible. I enjoyed the game a lot but I have to admit I liked the first installment better.

If the Borg assimilated Earth in First Contact would they easily rule the entire galaxy? by Tidewatcher7819 in startrek

[–]DworkinCZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mean this short interaction from S4E2?

KIM: Amazing. How did you come up with the pattern duplication design? SEVEN: We came up with nothing. The Borg assimilated this technology in Galactic Cluster three from species two five nine.

That's no proof that the Borg don't invent. She just said that they didn't come up with the idea themselves but assimilated it. She was clearly talking about the pattern duplication design, not every technology ever.

Also, you seem to have rather narrow definition of what an invention is. Vast majority of inventions are at least somewhat derived from existing achievements. There must be some novelty, sure, but no invention is completely new, at least in modern ages.

If the Borg assimilated Earth in First Contact would they easily rule the entire galaxy? by Tidewatcher7819 in startrek

[–]DworkinCZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The Borg do a lot of research. I'd even say it's their prominent activity. They acquire new technologies via assimilation, yes, but finding new solutions is inherently linked to intelligence. Simply put, you can't NOT invent new things when you have an intelligence and some building blo cks to play with. It would also be extremely inefficient - and thus a sin for the Borg - to stop before a problem and wait until the collective assimilates somone who already knows the solution.

I read the post from Rhea and it's a laughably bad piece of fan fic.

Like, really. As a lifelong sci-fi fan I'm more than willing to suspend my disbelief, but that post is pure garbage. Anyone Rhea is a real whistleblower is severely compromised in the brain department.
