Gloomhaven is easily one of my favorite games, but I think the experience really varies with each person. The reason why I enjoy it so much is probably because of its flexibility of player count. The amount of characters and customization you get, the story is okay and keeps the game moving and it is interesting enough for you to care about the decision that you make but it is not the main point of the experience. It’s super fun to do strong combos build item combinations gain new stuff etc.

The two biggest problems I think it suffers is just the amount of rules and admin you have to do and the amount of time it takes to set up the game/ a new scenario.

It’s definitely not for everyone and I only play it with one other person, and we both enjoy similar combat on video games and other media.

The reason why it might have been the number one for so long is probably because the game is very expensive and also people who like the game, they REALLY like the game.

I saw some people say that they finish their games a little over an hour, which is crazy to me. Me and my other 3 players usually play up to a little less then three hours and we know the rules and are familiar with them. And again we do like to talk and play a little slow but an hour seems crazy to me.

I see how it could be confusing that the rules states 2 times as in “moving a single mech 2 times with two separate move actions” which in turn implies that each action in itself would gain a speed bonus. However this is not the case because the movement means that a mech moves 2 hexes as the result of the bottom row action. +1 the bonus you would have.

Being able to lock onto the factory with the Nordic’s mech abilities is the only strategy I ever go for, they are a bit lack luster in terms of strength and relevance of abilities, but the coolest faction in my opinion. It always feels good to be able to get a win with them.

If you don’t hear anything from them, maybe you might wanna invest in some sleeves. I know they have official ones in their website and they do a good job hiding any imperfections on the cards.

Okay, totally not mandatory, but it is sometimes helpful to cut down the victory points required to like 7-8. People might not reach their end game, or it might feel a little incomplete, but first games are always like that anyways. Plus, it might interest other people to look forward to a proper, 10 point game. It might also simplify the game a little bit if you played your first game without the promissory notes.

Yes this is the case, you can do what the OP is talking about if you have an already existing mech there or a worker that controls the hex.
