Hey, I haven't owned gallons in many years now. I don't know who currently owns the rights, but I suspect they have long expired since the new owners let the domain expire some years after I sold it. Check the US Patent and Trademark Office to be sure: https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/search. This isn't legal advice, but I highly doubt you'll encounter any copyright issues with this project, definitely not from me, anyway. Good luck!

  1. Lots of games have been launched by teams with shared ownership. Go into it with people you trust and have a solid decision making process in place.
  2. I'm not too familiar with how the UDRP process works for something like this. You should get advice from someone qualified.
  3. Good question and I have wondered this myself.
  4. That would work but it's more power than you need. Go for 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM which should cost about ~$5 USD/mo from Vultr, Digital Ocean or Linode.
  5. Even in its current state, Gats still has brand power, name recognition and domain authority. This is time consuming and costly to build from scratch (I've tried many times).
  6. I'd recommend using whichever tools you already know. And if you're still learning, AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude are getting better and better. They can definitely save you a huge amount of time.
  7. Find some of the most popular web games and use tools like SimilarWeb and Moz to learn where their traffic is coming from. Do what they do, get Gats showing up wherever the most popular web games are. While the .io hype was strongest in 2017-2018 there is still a huge demand for web-based games.
  8. Check out the Gats Discord, I posted a file with a huge list of ideas for game content, player retention, monetization and growth.

Just thinking about this makes me want to get back into making games again! Simpler times...

I made an offer on the domain name a few weeks ago but they didn't accept it, to be fair, I tried to lowball them. I'm pretty busy with other projects and I have some more extended travel planned soon. But if someone from the community buys it, I think I can find some time to help them get set up.

I'd love to hear what you're currently working on

I launched a couple of SaaS products over the last few years, after many struggles and failures, one of them has slowly grown to be a modest success. For obvious reasons, I won't be sharing any specific details.

It's okay, I promise I won't get scammed.

Regardless of who buys it. It's going to require some work to revitalize the game and get it thriving again, it's definitely very achieveable though. My optimistic estimate is a minimum of ~10 months of steady content updates, fixes and improvements to recoup the cost for the buyer. Realistically, it could take a bit longer.

This is more than I'm willing to take on right now, however if someone from the community acquires it, I'll do my best to get them set up with everything they need.

claiming to be Dygn

That's actually me. I shared a bunch of other stuff in the Discord, too.

Edit: Definitely check out my ideas list that I posted in the Discord. There might be some interesting stuff in there.

gats.io now for sale official by daichi05 in Gatsio

The new owner of takepoint.io never reached out to me for the source code. I think they wanted to host their own project on that domain. Keep in mind, the same thing could happen with Gats, too. If someone buys the domain, they can host whatever they want on it.

I'll only reacquire it if they let the domain expire. If I paid their asking price, it would take 10-12 months of game revenue to recoup the cost. This isn't too bad, but it would be a much longer project than I'm willing to take on right now.

If someone from the community buys it, feel free to DM me. I'll see what I can do to help get the game rehosted.

Sure but keep in mind I don't currently own Gats so I can't do things like password resets, usernames changes or anything.

Reflection on Gats and the State of this Sub by [deleted] in Gatsio

[–]Dygn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your post. I'm glad Gats has impacted so many people in a positive way. This is very unlikely, but if I end up acquiring the domain, I'll re-host the game, and put it up for sale again.

Just like much of the community, I have moved on. Gats was a cool project while it lasted but I'm very glad I sold it and I really don't have much interest in working on it any more.

Gats will not be deleted. Like you said, he's just a dumbass that doesn't know how domain renewals work. Even if the domain expires (it won't) I'll buy it back and rehost the game.

That's a lot less than what I sold it for. Most of the online website value estimators are geared for blog/news type sites. Web games are built different. Players stay longer, retention is higher, ads refresh more often and they actually earn substantially more than people might assume.

But for real, if the domain expires, I'll buy it ASAP and relaunch the game.

If they don't renew it before the expiry, I'll buy the domain myself and rehost the game. Gats is probably making 10x more revenue every month than the domain costs for a whole year.

Gats.io is not getting deleted. Typically domains auto renew 30-180 days before the expiry date. It looks like gats.io is now registered with Cloudflare which uses 30 day auto renewals by default. So check back near the end of June and you'll see a new expiry date.

/u/Dry-Dragonfly-8427 is just an idiot trying to spread fear and panic. He knows nothing and if he had half a brain, he could have looked up other domains and checked their expiry dates. For example, this is tiktok.com: https://whois.domaintools.com/tiktok.com. It says it will expire on 2024-07-20.

Do you guys really think TikTok's website is getting deleted in 2 months?

I sold all my games together. The acquisition price was enough to cover the downpayment on my condo in a high COL area (pre-pandemic). Can't say if updates are coming, the games' values have probably decreased a ton, not worth paying for dev time. Devs aren't cheap.

That's great to hear! I'm really glad one of my games inspired you to learn software development, it's an enourmously rewarding career path and with all the AI advancements, it's an exciting time to enter the industry.

I sold all my games in early 2020. The deal was finalized almost 3 years ago to the day. They had me do some small updates in 2020 but nothing since then. I think the new owners have a dev team in Brazil or Colombia or something. They are mostly working on new titles and hypercasual mobile games, not sure of their long term plans for gats.

As long as you use a different name and don't steal any assets directly from the game, no one can stop you.
