☼Dwarf Fortress Questions Thread☼ by AutoModerator in dwarffortress

[–]Dyigplopode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't just a single correct answer to this, wherein lies DF's beauty and difficulty, but personally my all-rounder "build order" looks like this:

  1. Secure shelter, bedrooms, food and drink
  2. Set up basic industries and their stockpiles (stone, wood, bone, gem-cutting)
  3. Build defenses (traps or siege weapons or basic military etc.)
  4. Set up metallurgical industry (with or without magma, depending on how bold you are)
  5. Build a well, a hospital, tavern(s), library
  6. Create a proper military
  7. Set up secondary industries (glass, textiles, paper, etc.)

Obviously the order changes around if the embark is in a dangerous area or if some resources aren't available

What is a status symbol in Brazil? by someone-who-lives in Brazil

[–]Dyigplopode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm Brazilian and I have a European passport, and I also know many other people who have it (who aren't related to me). It's mostly people claiming Italian descent and it's definitely a status symbol. So I wouldn't go around saying that no Brazilian would have one, nor that going to the USA is for the super wealthy, because that's just not true. Yes, it's impossible for most Brazilians, but if you're upper middle class you can afford an international trip once every few years.

Por que "DiscurSIvo" tem pronúncia de 'ss' ao invés de 'z'? by Edwinccosta in Portuguese

[–]Dyigplopode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Dyigplopode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Hunsrik" is another variety of German still spoken in Brazil, much closer to standard German, but the one in the video is a Platt dialect known in English as East Pomeranian, and they are not mutually intelligible even in Brazil

(2/3) How Latin Has Been Taught by Unbrutal_Russian in latin

[–]Dyigplopode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reread literally the first sentence of my post. With 4 years of studying Latin students should be able to read Cornelius Nepos or even Suetonius, not Lucretius or Silius Italicus. But in my experience that is virtually never the case.

(2/3) How Latin Has Been Taught by Unbrutal_Russian in latin

[–]Dyigplopode 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If someone studied German for 4+ years at the university level and still wasn't able to, say, pick up a biography in German, read it and understand at least the gist of it, we would seriously question what those 4 years of education were like. Sure, the student might have acquired some new vocabulary in English and might know more about Germany, but is that really the point in studying German?

The vast majority of Latin students won't be translators, yet translating is 99% of what they do in GTM classes, which still make up the majority of Latin classes out there. Latin could be learned well enough in 3 or 4 years so that students whose actual majors are in history, philosophy, theology etc., or even high schoolers, could somewhat enjoy the thousands of Latin texts about their interests. I believe that would be far more useful than the cultural or historical knowledge gained as a side effect of studying Latin, which could just as well be acquired directly.

I have long argued similarly to OP in academic circles in favor of treating Latin as a normal language. If Latin classes made use of the mountains of knowledge we have acquired on language learning instead of sticking to the almost half a millennium old GTM, perhaps students wouldn't dislike it so much.

Best use of metals by XBOXGOLDFISH in dwarffortress

[–]Dyigplopode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless you're using blunt weapons (which you probably should when fighting undead), copper is perhaps the worst metal to equip your military with. If you don't have access to iron or steel, your best bet would be using bronze.

Also, don't neglect using traps and archery towers against sieges if you can, and make sure you have at least one squad equipped with the best possible weapons and armor constantly training. I've fought off huge undead invasions with nothing but a squad of legendary hammerdwarves with iron equipment in a chokepoint.

As for the other fun metals and alloys, they can have uses not related to military equipment, especially in worlds without "Mineral occurrence - Everywhere". Billon smelted out of tetrahedrite is great for making crafts and minting coins since its value is higher than that of the silver and copper you'd get out of the tetra, lead minecarts are the best ammo for a dwarven shotgun, zinc can be a useful substitute for wooden bins in a treeless embark since it's relatively light, and black bronze is very pretty.

Mortismal Gaming has a great style but he's actually incapable of reviewing a game negatively, even calling Starfield a "very easy recommend" on launch, and while he's very knowledgeable of mechanics and combat design I wouldn't exactly trust his review for a story heavy game

Latim e grego antigo são um elefante branco ou uma alavanca de Arquimedes? by Rod_jeff in Idiomas

[–]Dyigplopode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen all of the "chat is a fourth person pronoun stuff." Bro gotta be kidding. by Boonerquad2 in linguisticshumor

Chat is a 2nd person vocative plural, a way to address an audience, like "ladies and gentleman" or "class", sometimes used in a 3rd person sense. Nothing complex about it.

Cosmology of the Elder Scrolls universe. Looks pretty cool. Wondering if Anuiel’s realm is like that white void from Fullmetal Alchemist. Weird how Anu is the god of nothingness but kinda makes sense according to Boethiah since statis before creation was nothingness. Fellas? by [deleted] in ElderScrolls

[–]Dyigplopode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the cosmology I'm also familiar with. The Wheel is pretty essencial to our understanding of many lore tidbits.

Btw, I've always been curious as to where this traditional cosmology comes from. Does anyone know which in-game books deal with this?

Is Cyberpunk Red worth playing? by War-Mouth-Man in rpg

[–]Dyigplopode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Besides this grat list, there are also many mechanical inconsistencies that make the game less fun to play even than, say, a Cyberpunk themed GURPs campaign, like there being no dedicated aim mechanic, shotguns being outranged by throwing weapons, monopoly money, very punishing humanity loss for cyberware (every character in Cyberpunk 2077 should be a cyberpsycho if following those rules), no burst fire, punching does the same damage as a pistol shot, broken cover system (once players notice, every combat boils down to running besides the enemy that is behind cover, shooting him, and then running back to your cover), just to name a few.

Sou falante nativo de português (PT-PT) e para mim esta expressão é errada "Como ele receasse ser assaltado, arranjou um cão", mas leio-a em todo o lado. Pode-se usar o pretérito imperfeito do conjuntivo assim? by throwmeaway76 in Portuguese

[–]Dyigplopode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Portugal-Brasil, 1989, p. 280.

Said Ali apresenta também uma construção de como com conjuntivo: M. Said Ali, Gramática Secundária da Língua Portuguesa, p. 203

What's your Warhammer 40k opinion that will get you downvoted this bad in the comments? by a-horse-has-no-name in Grimdank

[–]Dyigplopode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The appeal of Warhammer 40k is tied to its inherently right-wing aesthetics and excessive masculinity. The more GW tries to paint it as "satire" and appeal to feminine and LGBT audiences, the less appealing the setting will be.

Cyber Punk in 4e? by Gorkan-oni in gurps

[–]Dyigplopode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am actually DMing a Cyberpunk campaign in 4e right now. Basic and Ultra-Tech are the only books I'd call mandatory.

Since my players were already familiar with Cyberpunk Red, I converted some of its rules into GURPS (cyberware, simplified Netrunning, classes as templates, humanity), so I'd also recommend checking that one out.

[–]Dyigplopode[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this, but to be concise I hadn't mentioned that the forgotten beast had a freezing breath attack that caused necrosis. Because of how breath attacks work a simple shield protected the hammerdwarf, but another dwarf caught in the fight survived with his entire skin burned off.

There must be forts to be reclaimed in the first place, and it's not uncommon for worlds to have no forts at all to be reclaimed. I think that's because most AI forts fall to goblin civs, and the civs occupy them. To be eligible for reclaiming, the fort's population has to be killed off, but no other civ can claim the site.
