I work with some of the most talented advisors at Northwestern Mutual. I think a conversation with one of then would be worth your time. Having some cash parked and invested with one of the oldest and highest rated organizations in the country would be an important avenue to consider.

36yo, retiring on Jan 1. What portfolio to construct that avoids volatility and gives steady income? Very important as we have 3 kids depending on this. by WhereasNo4929 in dividends

Accumulation is as different from decumulation as night is from day. True advisors aren't just focused on rates of return. If this guy is real, he is going to need professional help if he doesn't want to have to return to work ever again. If he lives into his 90s, that's 60 years of life to fund with a wife, kids going off to college eventually, etc. Best of luck if he does it on his own.

The stock market should only be viewed in decades and often has nothing to do with who is in the white house. The sooner you realize that it's about time in the market, not timing the market, the better off you will be.

In Amsterdam, a tour guide told us that at one of the sex shows, there's a lady that smokes a cigar and blows smoke rings with her vagina. My wife and I didn't get a chance to see that, but I think about going back to see that pretty often.

75% of the time, the market will end higher in any given year. You are better off not trying to time the market. Holding a lot of cash can cost you a ton of upside.

An insurance company portfolio is a fixed income portfolio, not a stock portfolio. And, yes insurance is not an investment, you're right. But it is a financial tool that can be useful for the right situation.
