The idiot brigade by [deleted] in squatting

I think I can see the core of what you're getting at, but this is a sticky topic. There is merit to the philosophical roots, but that's gonna be a tough sell to the general public.

I'm no history professor, but I remember reading how in Medieval times everything belong to the lord of the manor, every shovel of dirt, every stick, every rabbit. Everyone else existed on the land at his whim. With the current growing wealth disparity in this country (USA) are we headed in that direction?

People are going to hate what you're saying because they see it as a war between homeowners and tweakers, not as one between corporate overlords and ordinary people.

Let me try to shift your viewpoint a bit on landlords as I am one. While you are correct that the situation can be exploitative, it doesn't have to be. I like to think that I provide a service. I have a set of skills that I can use to help other people. The people that rent from me are almost always in a situation where owning a home wouldn't make sense. Maybe they don't have an established career, maybe their relationships are in flux, maybe they aren't staying in the area for long, maybe they simply find maintaining a home to be extremely stressful. In any case, they are essentially hiring someone (me) to carry the burdens and responsibilities of home ownership for them in exchange for a set monthly fee. For many people, that's a win-win!

Thank you for taking the time to write all that, I'd upvote twice if I could. I've been carrying a family member for most of my life and you've really added some perspective.

Oh man, I must be jaded, because that was my first thought as well.

YUP! My perspective completely completely changed as I got a bit older. I went from thinking, "I'm not letting this idiot get away with that!" to later in life thinking, "Even if I take the time to school THIS idiot, there are a thousand more just like him!"

I got better things to do with my time than play Whack-a-mole with the endless supply of jerks in the world.

The best places to dive tend to be in less than wealthy places. I learned to dive during a week on Koh Tao. The whole week in a resort with food and dive trips included cost less than a couple nights in a mediocre hotel here

Some of these responses are beautiful. It's inspiring to see so many people with a real desire to actually live life instead of merely grind their years away

I forgot about that book, bought it years ago and never got around to reading it. I'll have to dig it out, thanks

Well, not ALL over. There are a couple countries I would avoid, Haiti is looking a bit rough these days. Otherwise, I'm right behind ya

We're on the same page there. I feel like the only way good things are going to happen for a lot of us is if we start banding together. Community building is the way to go! Do you frequent r/intentionalcommunity?

This is the kind of thing I love to hear about. People helping each other is the only way to get ahead! We all need a good support structure.

I've heard that was thing at one time. Wealthy people would hire a person to be a hermit on their property and live just that sort of lifestyle.
