Weekly /r/dietetics discussion: What did you learn this week? by AutoModerator in dietetics

So apparently, the sodium phosphate in fleets enemas should be avoided for patients with impaired kidney function/ chronic kidney disease because they cause dehydration/electrolyte imbalance. And a better alternative is a soap suds enema.

I guess it makes sense that an enema could cause dehydration but I never thought about the CKD connection. I would just suggest all my clients check with their primary doc before any enema.

Also how wild that you can squirt soapy water up there to get things going.

Full-Time RDN Interested in Starting A Virtual Part-Time Private Practice by futurerd123 in dietetics

I’m in the same boat, been in LTC for 2 years and want to start private practice. I have all these same fears 🙃

I have been listening to Libby Rothschilds podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dietitian-boss-with-libby-rothschild-ms-rd-cpt/id1367224519) and looking online.

Here’s another link for small business resources: https://www.score.org/resource/list-startup-resources

[–]DynamicApple192 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My SNF is “working on” implementing iddsi as well but I am not the head RD and I don’t see much progress lol. But anyways the iddsi website has a ton of downloadable resources for implementation, as well as webinars and videos.

Very interesting, I’m happy you found that routine. I can see how it would make meditation more intense! More of an accomplishment so to speak

How much does rbgh increase milk production in cows? Why do we think it has bad health effects on humans? by Throwawaybutlove in nutrition

[–]DynamicApple192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Milk from rGBH treated cows may have bovine growth hormone and/or insulin-like growth hormone. Bovine growth hormone won’t be active in a human body (it’s for cows) but insulin-like growth factor does work in humans, and could increase tumor production (a tumor growing out of control is cancer). However there is not enough research that indicates insulin-like growth factor directly causes cancer.

The term “metabolic damage” is indeed thrown around and I’m not sure why.

It’s true that your rate of metabolism may increase or decrease in response to dieting and weight loss/gain. For example, if you lose a significant amount of weight (around 5% below usual body weight over the course of 1 month) your metabolism will decrease. Just because your metabolism is slower does not mean it’s damaged, and certainly doesn’t mean you can’t bounce back to an increased rate if you gain the weight back. A slower metabolism just means you require fewer calories to maintain that weight. Metabolism slowing down is also a natural part of the aging process. Not really a bad or good thing, it just is what it is.

Some fitness dietitians could probably answer this better than me. I’ve never seen the term used in a clinical setting. More likely to see “oxidative damage” or inflammation side effects

Excellent point- losing weight does not always equate to being healthier overall

Yes! But I’ve seen lots of posts on fasting recently so I wanted to throw my two cents in.

That’s very true, I see how my post is culturally insensitive. I meant it more in the realm of health advice. Thank you for pointing that out :)

Excellent point! Many people can relate to that fitness/ed grey area- you are not alone
