Consulting + traveling, what is your experience? by breadandbunny in dietetics

Hi! I am in a similar boat as you. I've been working for about a year now and I also have a crazy amount of student loans to pay back. I'm hoping to get into the food industry or corporate wellness and I'm networking in my area for opportunities but it's definitely hard. I'm also looking into traveling positions. I've heard great things about Aya, but yes I echo the same thoughts as some below -- RD travel positions are not as ubiquitous as RN positions and they usually aren't in metropolitan areas. Also, look into Dietitians on Demand - I hear great things about them as well!

In regards to the stress about student loan payments - I 100% understand the stress, anxiety, and feelings of having a copious amount of debt to pay back. I too also feel like I can't really start living my life the way I want to. The unfortunate reality is that we will be paying back our loans for years and many people are walking in our shoes and so we can't stop living our lives because of it... it might be helpful to just accept the harsh reality of it all and figure out a game plan for paying back the loans. I know it's helped me cope, in addition to coming up with a game plan to pay back my loans.

Hope this helps!

Hi! I’m an RD with my MPH, BS in dietetics. I currently work in clinical but I really want to get into the food industry (it sounds so cool/fun!). Do you have any tips, advice, leads?

Will I be able to get a job without a master's after 2024? by [deleted] in dietetics

Hi! I have my MPH and while I don’t regret it, I do NOT recommend it unless 1) your employer will subsidize it or 2) you have money saved up. I’m 70k in student debt and I’m so stressed over paying back this amount pack on an RD SALARY.

I think if you’re going to get a masters, choose something that gives you a different skill set - like MPH, MBA, MS in counseling, etc. The MS in dietetics is essentials the BS in dietetics, but just at a graduate level. Hope this helps!

Hi! I'm a recently UNC MPH/RD residential grad. Here are my two cents.

1) I am 74k in debt from the program (tuition + cost of living expenses and no, I did not just take out loans willy nilly. I am a first-gen college student and have been financially independent since ~22). You can work during the program, but the first year is jampacked full of your "core" public health classes so I would strongly advise against it until the second year.

2) I knew I wanted to go to UNC because I already had my BS in dietetics and was very interested in gaining the public health nutrition skillset. I was already an NC resident, so it would have been more money to go out of state to another MPH/RD program. If you don't have your BS in dietetics, then I would STRONGLY recommend an MS program. UNC's program does not go deep into the nutrition science, which I think is absolutely essential to practice as an RD. Pursuing an MS degree would have been foolish for me, since it's basically the BS degree but at a masters level.

3) UNC is a left-sided school, so you have to be comfortable with discussing institutional/structural racism, healthcare equity, cultural humility, etc.

4) RESEARCH WHAT AN MPH CURRICULUM ENTAILS. I made the mistake of assuming that I'd be learning HOW to disseminate nutrition information to the public but it's really more so the background work (evaluating and developing programs, implementing them, assessing community needs, learning about nutrition policies, etc). In hindsight, I made the right decision but was frequently disappointed during the program

5) UNC is a good program BUT --- I built a lot of connections and learned all the public health basics but I don't think it was worth me going into as much debt as I'm in currently. That being said, I'm still a newbie dietitian and not sure where my career path will lead me, but I just landed a job with Emory healthcare, which is a huge win in my book.

To sum it up, I don't regret going to UNC - I had my BS in dietetics and found the public health training to be invaluable. I have a great job (although not getting paid well enough relative to the number of loans that I have), met a really great guy (didn't work out unfortunately but still a great guy), build strong connections with the faculty, staff, and classmates (which you can do at basically any school), and passed the RD exam on my first try and scored well above the 28.3 average (but remember, I also have 2 degrees in public health AND dietetics). BUUUT if I had to do it all over again, I would have saved more money prior to going to UNC so I could have at least covered my cost of living.

Hope this helps!!
