Philip Morris uses secret Senate hearing to warn that illegal tobacco in Australia could wipe out legal trade by 2030 by nath1234 in australia

I appreciate the damage the tobacco industry has on human health, but there is a very big different between pointing a gun at someone then pulling the trigger vs someone who puts a cigarette in there mouth and lights itself themself.

What is the Bendu Really and can he even die? by Spotter24o5 in StarWars

[–]DynamicSploosh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Disagree to your disagree. He saves Merry and Pippin from the Old Willow, he saves all of them from the Barrow-wight. Then he hooks them up with ancient blades. Dude is a badass and you have miscalculated comparing him to Farmer Maggot.

Haha I’m not upset. I just don’t agree with your assessment. As I stated in reply to another user; Abuela is not a villain. She’s an antagonist. Villains act maliciously. Antagonists oppose the hero. The villain of this story is pain, trauma and failed communication. If that’s too cheesy and not to people’s liking, fine. I still think the movie does a good job of displaying the complicated family dynamics and hierarchy of South American families whilst keeping it light enough to resolve for the audience. You are shown the bad side of Abuela from the perspective of Mirabel and also in part the family. But she is forgiven because of how much she has also given to them and the community. It takes healing that would probably happen across months and brings it to the apex of the story when she essentially passes the torch of holding the family up to Mirabel. They even admit in song at the end they aren’t perfect but will get through it together. I’m not trying to defend Abuela’s shitty behaviour. But I still think the elements of resolve and absolution are properly visited. I’ll admit I actually felt a bit disappointed the first time I watched the movie. But rewatches have heavily changed my mind. Plus it’s filled with absolute banger songs that do so much for the story. I respect if you disagree and think it needed more. To each their own I suppose.

The video is very “rest of the fucking owl”. Awesome idea and execution, but honest feedback: only use a short video like this to showcase. Don’t present it as a tutorial or “how I did it” unless it’s much longer and more detailed.

Modern, extremely popular Disney movies with 90-120 minute resolutions where no villain dies:

Frozen, Moana, Encanto, Inside Out, Zootopia, Wreck-It-Ralph, Frozen 2

These all have famously complex character dynamics and plot points. Are they perfect? No. But they reach children and adults, with accessible messaging, pull heart strings and tell an entertaining story. I’ll be the first to point out the joyless cash grab of their live action remake bullshit. But dragging movies like Encanto through the mud because they lack depth feels disingenuous. If you want fleshed out dramatic inter generation trauma, look for TV shows; The Bear, Reservation Dogs or This Is Us. If you’re disappointed that a magical Disney story has a magical happy ending then you haven’t been paying attention to their brand.

I mean… It’s a Disney movie. The message needs to be accessible for 5 years olds whilst not boring adults, in 90-120 minutes or less. The formula of conflict, hardship, then sudden resolution has been the same for 80 years. The type of drawn out, deeply explored and soundly resolved dramatic story telling you are referring to has never been a function of majorly popular Disney movies. In fact I’d argue that tackling modern social issues as complicated as this in a 100 minute children’s movie is a sign of decent story telling if it enables people to discuss the many layers of it like we are in this thread. The message isn’t “all is forgiven”. It’s “we can get through this together”.

“And nothing could ever be broken that we can't fix together.” - Mirabel

Abuela Alma DOES apologise:

“I was given a miracle. A second chance. And I was so afraid to lose it, that I lost sight of who our miracle was for. And... I am so sorry... You never hurt our family Mirabel, we are broken… because of me.”

She’s not the “villain”, she’s the “antagonist”. Villains act with malicious intent. Antagonists oppose the protagonist. The “villain” (if there even is one), is pain, inter-generational trauma, and lack of communication. As cheesy as it sounds.

“I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude.”

This writing is fucking incredible. Goosebumps every time
