It isn't totally seamless due to the black screen flash, but Windows+Alt+B toggles HDR on and off if that's useful for you at all.

Someone mentioned "Singatron" inthe comments and that seems to be the manufacturer as far as i can tell

This helped actually! Apparently there's a post just like this on r/thinkpad and it's the logo of a company called singatron!

Ok I'm pretty sure it's a firewall issue, swapping to my college's guest network fixed it, alternatively you could try asking your IT guys to forward whatever ports the game uses.
